I hope it’s backwards compatible. It would be a shame to not have this Nintendo.

  2. Mae-Westender

I just hope to God it’s a Virtual Switch 1 environment with limited options that takes the better part of a minute to specifically boot into when you want to play an older game.

I wonder if BC will be on digital titles only or if they will stick to the SD card format for the switch two

  4. triplestumperking

I would be shocked if it *wasn’t* backwards compatible.

The switch has easily the strongest third-party catalogue and arguably the strongest first-part catalogue of any Nintendo console. To not leverage any of that for the new console would be wild.

  5. StormSafe2

How do articles like this get published when there hasn’t even been any confirmation at all that a new console is on its way?

Backwards compatibility and game achievements are my most wanted features for Switch 2.

  7. blukirbi

This will easily be a Day 1 Buy (Month 1 at latest) for me if this is the case.

I still have a lot of Switch games on my backlog to play.

If it’s not backwards compatible, I will not be participating in the Nintendo next gen. If it is, I will probably be buying one asap

  9. I don’t understand how anybody thinks it won’t be backwards compatible.

  10. sgrams04

I bought physical for every game I own. I’m hoping backwards compatibility means a cartridge slot and not just digitally purchased games.

It really wouldn’t make sense for it to NOT be backward compatible. The Switch was a massive success and I think we’re at a point where people don’t want to rebuy all their games when upgrading, especially with mobile gaming. With architecture basically being standardized now (x86 for PlayStation / Xbox and ARM from handhelds), it’s a lot easier than before.

With an install base we’ll in excess of 100 million it’s a no brainer. There are a hell of a lot of people with a library of Switch games to appeal to.

  13. This lines up with past rumors/reports about the Switch’s successor not having the same hardware architecture (as well as recent rumors/reports of custom architecture), making backward compatibility more difficult or limited.

If true, one has to wonder what the new architecture allows for that would make Nintendo (of all companies) consider it at the cost of innate backward compatibility. That is to say, hypothetically Ninty got two options from Nvidia: 1) a “Super-Mariko” chipset that is basically the next gen version of the Switch hardware, or 2) a radical departure that makes backward compatibility difficult. You’d have to wonder what positives option 2 has that would make it outweigh the negatives.

On an unrelated note, I hope the next Switch architecture can do near-instant loading times like modern consoles.

Good, the days of games being locked on one console should be over.

  15. kempnelms

I wonder if the digital games purchased on the Switch will somehow be able to carry over to the new version. If so I will definitely buy it.

  16. Poopynuggateer

“Allegedly” being the word that should you tell you this is bullshit.

Nobody knows anything about a potential Switch 2.

    It’s all just clickbait.

  17. Greygnarl_

No backwards compatibility = no purchase. Simple

  18. -LunarTacos-

I really hope it will have back-compat. I’m waiting for the Switch 2 to play TotK and I hope it will bu updated for the new hardware.

    Next console: Nintendo Split

Lets you have two screens to break off and share.

Also allows Nintendo to put DS/3DS games on the virtual console/remaster.

Edit: meant this as pie-in-the-sky dreaming, but I’m now also remembering the mini game for Mario Party where you put multiple screens together to form puzzles, and they were able to sense each screens relative orientation (the banana game).

I wonder if they e been iterating on that tech since.

  20. Ltsmash99

I’ve purchased over 200 games in the 5 years i’ve owned my Switch. It’s simply a deal breaker to not include backward compatibility.

  21. CivilDark4394

Zero chance it isn’t backwards compatible. I bet they do hd patches on switch games too, so that you can play them in 1080p or higher frame rates or both

I would replay botw all over again in 1080p 60fps.

  22. I’m always confused by the comments that go next gen console doesn’t exist. I feel like I’m missing the point. It’s literally the 7th year of Switch and Nintendo just shared they feel Switch has reached its plateau. There is simply no way they have the next thing not ready by now. Even if it’s releasing next year.

All these rumors can be obviously false, but the console MUST exist for sure.

  23. Animedingo

Not being Backcompat would single handedly kill the system

They even tried making games exclusive to the new 3ds xl and those died immediately.

  24. hopsmonkey

The Switch’s catalog has reached such a legendary status that a lack of backward compatibility in the next console is difficult to even begin to comprehend. What I am incredibly curious about is what enhancements may be available for current titles on the new console. My gauge will be something like LEGO Skywalker Saga. Going from Xbox to Switch for that game is jarring. If they can bridge that gap on the next Switch they will have achieved something pretty impressive considering the form factor and power budget.

  25. --Petrichor--

This is the difference between Day 1 purchase, or “maybe, eventually”

  26. The_polar_opposite

Nintendo and Microsoft live beside each other in Seattle. Microsoft spent a lot of development time working on backwards compatibility.

My prediction. Microsoft is funding the hardware for Nintendo next system.

  27. WackMcChicken

I guess I’m the only person in the world who wouldn’t mind something brand new. Forget back compat, forget using my same joycons or whatever going forward. Is anyone else ready to build a brand new library of next gen games?? Or just me

  28. adamchevy

I’m so surprised that it has backwards compatibility. Nintendo would love to sell us all of there games for a 3rd time. Most Switch 1st party games are Wii U games.

  29. MistStepThrowTrap

Leave it to Nintendo to fuck this up.

  30. Lakemine

Just let me play my Switch games I own already and let me buy all the old pokemon games (physical preferably, but will take digital so I can load it on a SD card) and let me trade them. NO online non owner subscription service BS. And let me buy all the old games. Then I’m good. If not that, what’s the point?

  31. MetaVaporeon

if the best anyone has is allegendly, dont fucking write clickbait articles about it
