So how would the release work for iOS/Apple users? It would be pretty scummy if Niantic locked the release to Android users only but it's a move I could see them doing.

This is why they took away the ability to redeem codes in app. To force you to go to their website and you must enter your acct info and password to do so. I don't trust them to have good security.
