Heritage Auctions is doing everything they can to turn video game collecting into baseball card collecting and coin collecting. Just another commodity to be bought and sold by the ultra wealthy.

Wasn’t this game on an episode of Pawn Stars?

Collectors lead to speculators, and speculators ruin any hobby they touch.
Anytime “grading” starts rearing its ugly head its over for the casual collector.

Honestly, who would pay that much? And why? It’ll probably sit in its case forever
I know rich people have a lot of money to waste, but fuck

This is dumb

saved you a click:
sold for $114,000. graded at a 9.4 out of 10, which means it’s in near-perfect condition, with everything sealed in the original packaging.

Graded games are fucking dumb
Tarantula_Man0
Wait, i thought Sonic 2 with a line was rarer?

Wasn’t this on Pawn Stars and the guy wanted $500,000?
Darah_Ketiga
Well, they did say games were getting more expensive last week.

Shouldn’t the Japanese edition (first edition) be worth more than the American edition, which is essentially a translated copy of the original Japanese version?

Why? I collect graded comics and I also collect video games
But a graded video game that just defeats the point (I collect the comics for the cover art)

So they don’t even know if the code on the cart is actually Mario Bros?

These ridiculous prices promote careful storage of historic items. Im actually quite for it. I don’t need a factory sealed Nintendo game anyway.
BurritoChan69
I got a beat up copy of mario duck hunt think I can get something close to that

Some parent will see this and get convinced little Jimmy’s old (common) N64 games are worth thousands
Also “game grade bad waaahh”

How do they know the game cartridge is in. XRay would probably kill it. Just saying.

Isn’t it crazy that this game used to just be all over store shelves and now it’s worth $114,000? I’m sitting here looking at the image and I’m just like, wow, it’s literally just a video game. It’s so wild how something that was once so common can become an item of insane value.

WATA is a joke. They have graded a Reproduction cart of FF2J that was translated into English(not original in any way), and a Hot Slots that took a donor gray cartridge(it’s an unlicensed porn game).
MiamiSlice
Wata / Heritage paid $100k for this, spent months trying to hype it up and then sold it for $114k? That’s embarrassing.
Turak64
This seems pointless to me. It only has value if it stays unopened, and thus is just something to look at and brag about how you dropped a load of money on it.
bobarcter
It’s pronounced Mario.

Those ugly VGA cases make it worth even less to me, but I guess it’s good it’s protected at least

Is this actually more rare than the New York run sticker sealed copies, or did it just sell for more?
