Depends how bad he wants a shundo. It’s probably worth it to keep it as it is, but I wouldn’t blame him for purifying. Shundos are sick

If you want to use it keep it as a shadow, it’s an above average ground attacker, and having a shadow shiny that good is so fun to show off!
If you want a beautiful, rare trophy, with the POTENTIAL for a useful mega in 2-3 years, go ahead and purify it. Sadly it won’t be very good purified until it gets a mega 🙁
“You can always purify it later” is very true, though it’ll cost a lot more to level up while in its shadow form, so gambling on a mega isn’t the worst idea. Personally I would keep it as a shadow and max it out just for fun, and because I’d revel in the chance to actually use a Flygon!

I know a lot of people say don’t purify…. BUT I like to complete my Pokedex as much as possible. If you didn’t know, there’s different type of PokeDex categories you end up unlocking the more types of Pokemon you get. Here are some of the following:
So… if your dad is more of a completionist for his PokeDex, purifying his trapinch will work towards him unlocking categories #2, #3, and #4. You have to obtain a certain amount of these Pokemon to unlock those categories in your Pokedex. If trapinch isn’t meta for any PVE or PVP, you might as well just purify, preferably at the last evolution to save on candy.

No matter what he does, it’s a great catch and I’m jealous haha. I would purify, but I’m probably in the minority group of players that doesn’t super care for shadows. Stardust cost is just too high for me and I’m still working on powering up different Pokemon so I’ll have better type coverage for raid battles. If stardust and candy cost isn’t an issue, I’d probably keep it as a shadow. It’s still preference. Yes, shadows hit harder, but not if you don’t/can’t make the stardust and candy investment. Side note, I’m prerry sure now is the time to get rid of frustration, so this is good timing for him to keep it as is if that’s what he chooses to do.

Right now GameFreak is working on the Legends ZA game. The expectation is that mega Pokemon will be in a game again and that they will add new megas. Flygon in particular was supposed to get a mega the first time around but they couldn’t settle on a design so it was scrapped. There is a good chance it will get a mega in this game if they do add new ones.
In the event that Flygon gets a mega I would purify this Pokemon for a mega shundo. This decision will take at least a year to pan out, longer maybe.
