They can’t tell shareholders they hate AI because shareholders are the biggest morons on the planet. They have to talk to them like children. Miyamoto made it pretty clear the vision of the company’s future has no place for generative AI.

This is most likely shareholder speak that isn’t worth reading into, but I mean, I don’t see a problem with this. AI is a tool, I don’t think it’s use is inherently bad depending on how it’s used and to what end

They have to say this appease shareholders or else they’ll tuck their tails and run away. Shareholders are hype beasts in the worst way because they affect the world at large.

AI itself isn’t the problem anyway. Uncredited artist work being used to generate content is.

What I forsee happening is AI being broken down into more specified use cases, and the artists who provide the generative content being compensated and contracts being written up that are essentially for those cases. For example, a company hires or contracts with an artist and says “create a bunch of medieval themed art for us to use to feed our generative AI that we can use in the future.” You can argue whether that model is good or for artists, but there’s no putting the cap back on the bottle at this point, and there’s no shortage of artists who will do anything to get paid/credited, so it’s going to happen.

Why would they be? AI is a big step forward in technology. As long they’re not using it in their art I don’t see the problem.

They will be using AI Upscaling after all.

Shareholders would kill them if they said otherwise.

    They won’t.

Why does everyone on the internet see AI and immediately associate it with art? It’s so much more than that…

  9. Jonesdeclectice

I mean, video games have been using AI since pong… unless people truly believe the computer-controlled paddle was sentient? LOL

  10. Always amazing to me how they talk about AI like it’s an oracle. “Use AI”. WHRE?? HOW?? FOR WHAT??
    This is moronic.

Of course not. As always with Reddit, the pull quote on Miyamoto was taken out of context.

My understanding of what he said is that if AI use becomes widespread, Nintendo would approach it differently than the competition.

To think that AI would not be used for things like, for example, programming assistance, is asinine.

AI will be, at the very least, used as an assistance tool for all manner of game development tasks.

There’s more to AI than just wholesale spitting out an image to be used in lieu of an image made by a human being.

That’s something I can’t see Nintendo ever doing, whereas the developers of “I’m an awkward Senpai and My Kohai is a Purple Haired Waifu! Episode 3” probably will.

  12. People are gonna be shocked when they realise AI governs game logic.

  13. Every game company will end up using generative AI because it’s genuinely useful in game development, the thing is that this will obviously result in job loss but a swifter development, it’s going to get real interés in just a couple of years.

They have been using AI tools since New Super Mario Bros Wii, for the super guide. So to say they were against all uses of AI is wrong.

You know, Amiibo in Smash are AI that machine learns from the player and attempts to copy it. That sounds like AI as we think of it today. So I think actually using more AI will probably be moreso like this, if not just shutting up shareholders.

  16. There’s a difference between Nintendo being against generative AI and not using AI at all. It would be really silly to not use it at all, as that would take some powerful tech completely off the table for no reason.

I’m definitely in favor of Nintendo not using generative AI in their games, but if they use AI in other ways during the development process (or integrated into potential hardware, like DLSS), that’s perfectly fine IMO.
