    > This is Furukawa. At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.

I don’t think anyone had any doubts, but it’s nice to have a confirmation that it’s actually happening.

  3. MXC_Vic_Romano

Part of me thinks they don’t care enough but it’d be fantastic if back-compat came with a performance boost. Even if it’s something simple as games hitting their performance targets.

  4. Gegolan

This is all I needed to hear. Awesome news!

  5. Let us transfer eshop stuff too. Keep everything intergrated like Xbox Live and PSN do.

  6. andrewpl

Amazing! I was worried they wouldn’t as they have been constantly porting titles from older generation to the switch.

I’m sure they can still port games from the ds or 3ds 😉

  7. Pancreasaurus

And this is why they went after emulators when they did. The software is going to be nigh identical so the Switch 2 would have been immediately cracked.

  8. Yesshua

This is good, however this does leave open the possibility still that it will be a digital only compatibility. No guarantee of a physical cart slot.

They’ll PROBABLY be cartridge compatible (at least for the launch model) but just reminding people not to count chickens before they hatch.

  9. gaysaucemage

Hopefully games with unstable frame rates run better even if they don’t get an update. Confirmed backwards compatibility is nice to have.

  10. Hockeylover420

Switch 2 cartridges are most likely going to have a 3ds notch

  11. OkiKagu59

Yay! I was expecting it, but it’s great to have it confirmed.

  12. Flagelant_One

How am i suposed to beat NNN with tweets like these?

  13. NDeceptikonn

Now if they can add DK64 and Diddy Kong Racing to the NSO!

  14. ForgottenForce

Not surprised but glad it’s confirmed

  15. pejic222

An obvious but important announcement all the same to make sure software sales won’t decline too much in the meantime

  16. fender0327

Great to get the confirmation. They really needed to keep that compatibility

  17. Adventurous_Smile_95

Game backward compatibility was confirmed 🙌

  18. Asuparagasu

Here we go again with Nintendo announcing something that would be considered a notable gaming news like it’s just nothing lol

  19. ChemicalExperiment

    Is this backwards compatibility confirmation!?!?!???

  20. JaxTheCrafter

literally this is the greatest news I’ve gotten all week

I was holding off on buying a lot of switch titles for this reason

the only caveat is… will the online store transfer? or if I buy titles online will I have to buy them again?

  21. blukirbi

Glad to hear it’s backwards compatible for the most part!

I just wonder if it’s gonna be a “Switch 2” kind of system or if it’s going to take a different approach.

  22. Gingerbread808

Finally an update, this is good news!

  23. Lightmanone

Bit concerned they said software, not gamecards….

  24. valryuu

Good, because I’m still not done my Switch backlog :’)

  25. DM_Ur_Tits_Thanx

Im still bitter about paying a subscription for p2p. What justification does nintendo have for charging online if they dont even host their own servers.

  26. IUseKeyboardOnXbox

Am curious about how they are going to handle this. Given that T239’s gpu isn’t binary compatible with the Tegra X1’s gpu.

  27. DefiantCharacter

    >Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including **its compatibility with Nintendo Switch**, will be announced at a later date.

“It’s compatibility with Nintendo Switch,” huh?

  28. ShigMiy

    BIG W!!!

Now we just need Switch 2 to natively improve performance on games that were targeted for Switch 1 and we’ll be eating G O O D! 👏👏👏

  29. gimpycpu

Now this confirm that I’m getting the switch 2 🔥

  30. oldskoofoo

    This is awesome!

We may not know any details about the console hardware, this is awesome to know that I can still play all my switch games on the new console.

They may drip feed a bit of these big questions we want answers to while making us wait until after Christmas.

If they tell me you can actually message people on my friends list on the console and voice chat I might die, happily of course.

  31. bigpig1054

Glad to have confirmation that NSO is carrying over. No more having to re-purchase games.

  32. TheOneWithALongName

Guess I can buy Xenoblade 2 & 3 not worrying about not able to finish them before Switch successor.

  33. siralysson

Thanks, Xbox. Always pushing the industry forward

  34. Gasarakiiii

This is pretty much my only ask for the Switch 2 (or whatever it will be called), so that’s amazing, I know the rest of it will improve on the original, hoping for OLED screen as well.

  35. DankeBrutus

I’ve been saying for years now that it would backfire massively if Nintendo did not support backwards compatibility for Switch games.

The Switch has sold more than the Wii. It has sold almost as much as the DS. The WiiU could play Wii games and the 3DS played DS games.

  36. Dukemon102

I have a bunch of 3rd Party games like Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Nier Automata and Chrono Cross in my backlog. Maybe I should wait to see if they get a 60 fps patch in the new console before playing them.

  37. Exciting_Audience362

I would be way more all in on Nintendo digital if they could confirm purchases will roll forward. I’m sick of Nintendo trying to resell the same games every gen.

  38. KaptainKardboard

I am very happy to hear this. I still have a considerable backlog of Switch games and I’d like the idea of having my Switch docked permanently for all the multiplayer games I play with my family without constantly having to save and close whatever 1p game I’m currently playing on my Switch 2.

  39. AKA-Link77

    At last…

    the NX is finally coming.

  40. FuckUp123456789

I don’t really care about performance enhancements, but will saves transfer across generations
