Illegal Moves On Pokemon NPC’s… But Are They Actually Cheating?

when I was playing Pokemon Emerald as a young adult I noticed this sort of weird discrepancy with Winona’s Altaria during her gym fight, and it’s been fun ever since then looking out for these move oddities with NPC trainers! There is something really fascinating to me about this specific principle though, much more than the easy grab of saying it’s cheating. It’s very cool to think in a world as big as Pokemon that there are experts and masters out there capable of things that we as “vanilla” players aren’t! It makes the world feel bigger and can pose other characters as their own people with special abilities, it’s so cool! Cooler than mudkip even. This one’s for all the machoke, masquerain, and drilbur fans out there

  1. Are we not gonna talk about the Shadow Force Banette in BDSP's postgame? It's crazy lmao

  2. I remember participating in an online battle competition back in the day, where everyone who participated got a Mystery Gift Dragonite with Lance's moveset, including Barrier.
Which kinda makes me realise that, when using Pokemon with event exclusive moves, we the players are the ones cheating against the NPCs

  3. Winona having Dragon Dance on her Altaria is somewhat cruel in a game where you can't get any Ice types or Ice type moves before facing her. Thankfully, you at least get the TM for Rock Tomb from beating the 1st gym.

  4. Theres a Seedot in Coliseum that knows stun spores. This man could get any pokemon with any illegal mpve and he chose stun spore for a Seedot. Theres a few other ive come across but i can't remember them off the top of my head. Just know gen 3 has a lot of it. Especially in the battle tower/ resort

  5. For things like Winona's Altaria and especially for underleveled evolved Pokemon like Fallner's Pidgeotto and Lance's Dragonites, I like to think that Pokemon can lose levels over time if they're not trained, it's just the player never sees it because the games take place over a short period of time

  6. Yoooo, who has the EQ Lanturn in Gen III?

This reminds me of the Shadow Pokémon in the GC games having otherwise impossible moves. I actually love this kind of thing. I'd like to see in-game quests for unique Pokémon in future installments.

  7. birdkeeper Lance is an expert in flying type, that's a great reason for his pokemon evolving early too

  8. I'd like if they did this more, I wonder if it is just mistakes. Rock slide aerodactyl is a funny one since why didn't it have access to that move

  9. I definitely prefer this explanation, that Type specialist are simply better at raising those types and teaching them things that more generalized trainers don’t have the specific skills for.
Kind of like how Gym Leader TMs were originally meant to be attacks that those Gym Leaders actually INVENTED, so you could only get those TMs from them.

  10. I can give the benefit of the doubt for some situations like Dragonite knowing Barrier. It could be a random single move single use move tutors that Lance met sometime before. Others are a bit ridiculous like Earthquake Lanturn.

  11. And we never questioned what Lamce was doing at the Lake of Rage? Where Team Rocket were doing experiments causing Pokémon to evolve, and Lance had Dragonites at levels under when Dragonair is supposed to evolve 🤨

  12. I always found it was a great way to spice things up later in the game. When you get so used to type advantage and getting the right match up; having your opponent do something sneaky like that helped keep it fresh

  13. Love the fresh perspective of “they aren’t cheating, they’re just goated!”

  14. I'm thankful for the Gen 1 jank, it gave birth to ATV the Venomoth becoming the dragonslayer in Twitch Plays Pokemon.

  15. I've been saying for years that Lance has under level dragonites as a result of his skill as a trainer. Lance isn't upset because the red gyrados was underleveled he was upset it was forced to evolve before it was ready. His Pokémon weren't forced to evolve they were just ready to do so
