  1. I remember back in 2016 when it was completely FREE and you could walk or bike for miles and pickup random Pokemon. I remember how packed my local park was throughout the day with multiple folks locked and loaded with their battery packs and charging wires hanging from the side of their belts and backpack pockets 😂 lol. I remember when coffee shops and burger joints got involved and these places were so packed. It got so crazy that there were Pokemon in the middle of the streets and on the side on freeways but overall, it was an amazing experience in meeting new friends for the first time as complete strangers hanging out communicating walking around playing Pokémon Go and exchanging phone numbers before smartphones got out of hand “Metaphorically speaking” with the whole social media. I can’t believe it’s been 9 years now 😮

  2. My Dad loves Pokemon go, he plays it every day while walking the dogs. I'm trying to get him to play one of the new games with me

  3. Pokemon has always been way more about battling and team building to me than just mindlessly catching, so the appeal of PoGo evaporated pretty quickly for me.

  4. Never forget that they increased the radius for catching Pokémon during COVID and it bumped their player count as disabled players joined, and then they moved it BACK like a pack of absolute bellends 😇

  5. Played until I heard about how they were tracking and using player data like camera scanning for whatever Geospatial AI model they’re developing, I miss when things were doing only what they were labeled as in the box.

  6. I love Pokemon go still! It’s gotten a bit more monetized which sucks, but it’s still fun and decently possible as a free to play, but kinda sucks if you’re not near an urban area

  7. why are asian women so wildly fearful of the sun? "oh no! the sun! better put on a hat and a toe length dress and carry around an umbrella" btw masks DO NOT protect against anything

  8. Between Solitaire and Pokémon Go, Polygon isn’t beating the “my 60 year old mother” allegations.

  9. I’ve been playing Pokémon since it first debuted in the US. The main reason I picked up GO (and still periodically play it) is because until a couple of years ago, I have not gotten a Shiny in a single Pokémon game I’ve played. Haven’t even come across a single one. For the longest time, I could only seem to get them in GO, so I’d port them over to the main games.

I know Shinies aren’t better or worse stat wise than any other Pokémon, but I had FOMO, dammit.

  10. My area's local con was shutdown indefinitely because the organizer was cheating on his wife with the organizer of the area's Pokémon Go club. When the news broke he canceled the con, refused to refund vendors who had already paid for spots, and he went into hiding. Eventually he went to jail over it and very few vendors got their money back (as far as I know).

  11. Not to be serious in a Polygon chat, but Pokémon Go was designed to sell location data, it’s in the terms and conditions.

  12. I'm shocked there are still half the player base as when it was at peak popularity
