Yeah, really sounds like the best way to promote your system now that most people already own one or were deciding between systems. The Switch 2 is more of a competitor than ever…

Sucks to hear, it feels weird to do this so many years after release of the console. I would think at this point most people who were still looking at the console but are on the fence about it might feel this is the deciding factor against buying it.
Also… yeah, I can’t help but notice a distinct lack of the same kind of outrage we’ve seen around here, lately. Saw that coming. I’m sure people are mad, but I’m so far noting the lack of the “call to action against a greedy corp” that I’ve seen over and over since the Switch 2 presentation.

Thankfully I already own the console, but this is the first time we saw a console getting more expensive over time. It really shows how shit is the economy we live in.

Waiting for the “drop the price!” crowd to show up at the next state of play I guess, right? RIGHT?!
psycho-batcat
The old ways were to wait until the console was cheaper. The new way is to buy it immediately because the price will go up over the generations lifetime.
It’s ok I kind of felt my whole life that my gaming hobby would die at 40.

People complaining about Switch 2 pricing but at least Nintendo backs it up with exclusives.
I love my PS5, but can’t really argue it offers much different from an Xbox or PC.
Oddish_Femboy
Does it have games yet?

So that people all understand; this price increase currently only affects the UK, mainland Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
The sad part is that I expect Sony fans to actually come out and say that the price increase is a good thing. Reminder that the PS5 is a 5 year old console in November with barely any games, and any games it does get go to PC not long after.
Edit: I had a look at the PlayStation subreddit, there were people saying that this is good because it will encourage purchases of the disc drive edition of the PS5… even though the price for the disc drive edition hasn’t gone down, the gap is just larger now.

Said this in the r/games thread but two price *increases* in a generation is actually insane. Genuinely dreading next gen at this rate and would be considering moving to PC if it wasn’t for insane GPU prices. Looks like the tech market just isn’t getting cheaper fast enough, unlike previous generations.
I love how everything seems to be getting more expensive at the same time when people have less disposable income. Fully bracing for the return of the $600 PlayStation.

Not to sound like a console warrior, but, it’s a good thing they haven’t really made anything that appeals to me in over a decade ( although I would love to get my hands on Astro Bot… I aint gonna buy the console just for that one game. )

I am 90% sure Sony did this, so they are more expensive and thus more premium than Nintendo.
Same bs apple does a lot.

Sony announcing a PS5 price increase at the height of the switch2 price controversy is the most Sony think Sony could ever do.

Yeah, fun times. The Digital Edition had been on sale here for £321-340 in the last week or so too.
It’s funny that they’ve raised the digital console price by £40 but cut the disc drive price by £30, and not raised Physical or Pro edition prices at all: so it’s just people that don’t want a disc drive that should pay extra…? Weird.
narlzac85
Since this is just for the digital edition, was it significantly cheaper than the version with the disc drive before? What was the price for each before vs now? (In the affected regions of course)
ZiggyMangum
Good thing I got mine late March.
linkling1039
And they already increased the price… on a 5 year old console, but not in the US.
Honestly? Feels like the rest of the world is paying the bill for the US here. They don’t wanna increase the price on a market they doing so well but are very comfortable doing so in other markets.
Iagp
Is this increase jjust for US or for Europe as well?
SilentStorm2020
Getting too expensive to play videogames anymore. Console and video game prices keep increasing. Guess I have to start mobile gaming cause it’s way cheaper 😆.
Hope-to-be-Helpful
I don’t understand derstand how PS5 has gone UP in price for a second time this gen

Of course, if I had to bet money on anyone upping the price, it would always be on Sony 😆

Sadly, executives in the video game industry recognize that right now, in our world political economic climate, escapism is the most valuable media property. They also know that to achieve that escapism, millions of people will pay large amounts of money to achieve it.
The only defense is to be a smart consumer.

I bought a ps5 about a week ago due to my concerns about the Tariffs increasing things. I can’t believe it went up this quickly.
Objective-Chicken391
How is anyone going to survive now that they can’t say the Switch 2 is more expensive than a PS5?
kahunah00
Who didn’t see this coming?
Nintendo_Thumb
DROP THE PRICE SONY!!!
sweetcinnamonpunch
Of course the price increases will hit every platform eventually. Nintendo just happens to be the first to release a console in this turmoil.
Watch PS6 coming with 80$ games and a 650$ console. I suspect Sony in particular to be hit hard, since as far as I know they produce mostly in China.
iSanghan
they blame fluctuating exchange rates… brother the $ tanked, not the €, the console should cost LESS, not MORE
Oblivion-Evil
Sooo is console gaming as a whole just fucking cooked or?
MagnusBrickson
Glad I got the disc drive version just before the previous piece hike.
I’m not buying a PS6 for the final part of FF7 remake, though.
CheapSushi117
I thought Sony was consumer friendly though?
Kenobi_High_Ground
The basic Steam Deck has become the budget games console.
