My first thought: “It’s twelve days late for an April Fool’s joke, right?”

Wow. I wasn’t one of the people who wanted an NES Classic but my heart goes out to those who never got one. Hopefully they’ll go on to make an SNES Classic in the future.

So, Nintendo doesn’t want to make money?

  4. twofivethreetwo

This is a bummer for those still looking. I grabbed one at launch and managed to get my son one earlier when Best Buy had the restock but I feel for those who really want one.

  5. Scalpers are going to have a field day.

What the hell went on with this thing behind the scenes? Non-stop supply issues capped off by a sudden discontinuation while there’s still clear demand.

  6. clearrants

But… but… Nintendo was keeping supply constrained to create hype for the system so they could make more money down the line!!

I’m not convinced they ever made any in the first place.

This sucks. My girlfriend surprised me with one last week. She managed to get one through that Best Buy fiasco. I still wanted to get an extra OEM controller but they are going for $40 on ebay…

  9. DigitalFirefly

So much for my plan to wait until I can walk into the store and buy one.

That sucks. I thought the NES Classic was a really cool idea.

Nintendo never actually wanted to support the NES Classic Edition. They made it for a quick buck around Christmas, didn’t expect it to be quite as popular as it was, and they didn’t want to follow through on that popularity because they were busy focusing on Switch

They are all hands on deck right now doing everything they can to make the Switch successful. NES Classic Edition, for all the money it can make them right now, is not long-term sustainable. Consider also that Switch is already having issues staying in stock, so when their actual, sustainable plan for the future is having trouble keeping up with demand, why would they bother using up assembly lines on a quick buck product?

tl;dr: The NES Classic Mini is a toy, and for Nintendo to survive, they need to focus on people buying their games, not their toys.

First I was gonna get it for my parents as a Christmas gift. Then, maybe my dad’s birthday. Okay, maybe just when I can get them one.

    Oh, never mind, I guess.

  13. ShyGuy322

I got one at Gamestop yesterday and am willing to part with it at cost if anyone is interested.

    $60 plus a $340 shipping fee.

Dammit now I will never get an additional first-party controller! I’ve actually never seen additional controllers anyway except on launch and when I was in line they had a whopping 2 to sell with the 46 systems the store had received…..

  15. HyliasHero

Well good thing I gave up on that dream a while ago.

  16. DerpyArtist

Good lord these things are gonna coast $800+ on ebay.

  17. RunnersDialZero

This was 100% a stopgap solution to not having The Switch and Zelda out for Christmas. When they knew they needed four more months, they made the decision to make this.

I’m sad that for those who wanted one, these will cost a fortune now, but optimistic that this means there may be VC games coming to Switch sooner than later.

Also, the demand for The Switch definitely means they needed to shift focus.

Wow, that sucks. “Hey, let’s discontinue a product that’s been in high demand for almost 6 months, that’ll go over well with consumers!” Congrats to the 5 or 6 people who were lucky enough to get a hold of one.

  19. somekirbyguy

It sucks, really. They had so much that would’ve sold, if only they made more.

  20. [deleted]

But I don’t want a switch to play old games.

  21. BuddhaBliss

What a shame, but still won’t buy from scalpers. Ever.

  22. *cannot keep the fucking thing on the shelves*

Nintendo: this is making too much sense and money, let’s stop

  23. Ronnie_M

And ’til this day, I STILL haven’t seen one in stores in person. Absolutely ridiculous that they’re already discontinuing it. They failed so hard with their supply and demand
