I updated my switch to check out the new stuff and got this message when I tried to play Skyward sword, I thought maybe they meant my in-game name for Link cause I named him idiot but no, they deemed my name inappropriate. My profile name was "Thorny", which as you can probably guess is my name with a Y. I've had this happen with games before, I don't mind removing the Y, but it's annoying that they just now decided to filter names.

Pretty sure they could always take action against “inappropriate” names.
But this seems like an automated thing.
Horny must have been added to the banned words list.
It happened to me in the past like 2 years ago, same username as my reddit, got changed to ????. THey update their filter from time to time.
They’ve always had a lot of filter words and the list keeps growing with each new update (and sometimes it’s the only darn thing in the update!!!!)
If you had a name with a word that was just blacklisted, you would’ve been struck with this earlier, but I guess they *just* found out people could use it as a workaround to say things like “I’m so Thorny”
They add to the bad word list with most updates. So this will happen to new people after updates, and now we know horny is on the list. Probably can change it to Thorniest.

This isn’t new. I had a few people on my friend list get the same treatment a few months ago.
Back when I played Smash…….. aggressively, I used to use accented letters to bypass the standard filter, but I noticed after every update they had to make “general system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience” that each one of them I couldn’t anymore. Figured that’s what they were fixing with those updates.
After this current update, I think they might’ve done another wave with what the filter picks up, and unfortunately you were a victim of this. Never seen this notif before, so it’s cool you posted this.

When I first signed up for my Nintendo account, none of my preferred handles fit in the naming field.
So I decided to reference one of my favorite Simpsons jokes that’s literally about names not entirely fitting in video game text boxes.
As a result, I am the proud owner of the THRILLHO Nintendo account.
Still has yet to be removed.
Try changing it to Thourny.
The real surprise here is that the obvious bad word wasn’t already in the filter tbh.

My name is very inappropriate. I never knew about this.
My username (not this one) was an old Fire Emblem character, from before it was released overseas. A number of years ago they localised the name but ended up just changing it outright since it was one of those things where the Japanese devs pick a foreign word because it sounds cool but didn’t really work in English.
Anyway Scathach also has the Scunthorpe problem in full swing.
