Anyone else think the move Chilling Water should’ve had a freeze status effect?

Wait no you’re right, a water type move with the Freeze status would go hard.
AevnNoram
Absolutely not. freeze and sleep are the most unfun status conditions. Frostbite and drowsy were a huge improvement that should have made it into SV and future games
InfernalBonobos
If it doesn’t freeze then why call it “Chilling” in the first place? It doesn’t even lower speed…

If we changed freeze to frostbite like in PLA, then absolutely! But I think we should keep the methods of full freeze to a bare minimum.
StreetReporter
Not unless they completely rework freeze. That would’ve been the single most broken move in Pokémon
Pengwin0
How about this: Freeze should be removed from the game. Pleeeeeease just bring back frostbite. Nobody has ever done anything enjoyable with freeze
Aduro95
Thematically it works. But competitively, scald is already one of hte best moves in pokemon (especially in singles, but its not bad in doubles), and freeze is an even more risky status condition to switch into.
Chembaron_Seki
Or maybe we should not give water type literally every effect under the sun? How about that?
Crocagator941
No. Freeze is extremely unfun, even more than sleep already is

Wasn’t Chilling Water supposed to be a lower power replacement for Scald, since it was so strong?
It was added in SV when they removed the Scald TM and the move from a lot of learnsets. It also has an attack dropping effect like burn. It’s supposed to be functionally similar instead of freezing.

Ever taken a cold shower? You don’t freeze with chilly water…
JB0SS95
No because if the move is made of liquid water then it isn’t cold enough to freeze.
charlotte_the_femboy
No it’s only chilling, not freezing, that’s like getting hypothermia from just opening your freezer
TH3_G4MER_5
People are saying that it should freeze if freeze was changed to frostbite and I agree we should get frostbite but I just realised.
Would freezing glare (galarian articuno’s signature move) make sense to cause frostbite even though the whole point is to freeze targets? or would freeze still be in the game but be rarely used like badly poisoning? And if it would work like that, what if we could get an ice equivalent of toxic spikes?
this is kinda off-topic now but I want to know how that would work.

The physical properties of water allow it to become hot enough to burn without it changing its physical state. It will get hot enough to burn before becoming water vapor (steam).
However in order for water to be cold enough to freeze something, it too would already need to change states and become ice as liquid water cannot become cold enough to freeze something before freezing itself.
Unless you want to become pedantic about liquid metal being “frozen” back to a solid state by using liquid water, but in the context of Pokemon it wouldn’t matter.

No because I kind of like chilling water is more an early level version of scald. Especially after the recent gens decided to take out so many moves in the game, we need more middle of the games moves.
Cool_Fellow_Guyson
It would make so much sense
gliscornumber1
I don’t think so. Scald was fucking broken and chilling water was supposed to be a more balanced version of it. (Hence why scald’s distribution was absolutely gutted in SV). if it had a 30% chance to freeze it would still be pretty busted, although the lower power, and Freeze’s unpredictability would make it less broken than scald
Silly_Painter_2555
If it did, we’d already have a WolfeyVGC video about the move.
yummyfightmilk
It’d get banned out of the format if they gave it anything above like a 10%. People just love to hate on the RNG mechanics and reliable freeze is one of them.
Redraph_1105
It should at least have a chance to flinch. Have you ever accidentally walked into a shower when the water is still cold? That always makes me flinch
Nu_Eden
It’s called chilled, not frozen
MuTheCat20
I would argue both should have burn effects
LeoCraveiro
Great point
TyrantRex6604
The origin of the move comes from 水を差す(adding cold water into hot water), or 泼冷水 (splashing cold water) in chinese, which means to ruin one’s good mood. Hence in game it has the attack drop effect on the opponent.

I say get rid of Freeze entirely and replace it with Frostbite
