  1. The extra lore they gave Falkner in the beta of GSC was actually great. There's a ROM hack that uses a bunch of the unused beta stuff that was uncovered it's pretty great

  2. Falkner always had a weird way of standing out to me among first gym leaders for not only the heavy amount of blue (which was always one of my favorite colors) but also he was much like Brock where he's super effective against one of the starters but not weak to any of them unless you grind your Totodile to get ice fang quick, and that combined with the really solid "first dungeon" design of the Sprout Tower made Johto always have this fun feeling of progression

  3. Fun Fact about Falkner: while his level 9 Pidgeotto is impressive, what was far more impressive is that he originally had a Level 10 Pidgeot, though this was changed very late into development.

In fact, you can still see his Pidgeot in the infamous SpaceWorld '99 demo

  4. Given your notes on his clothing and the martial vibes, i like to think that a more modern iteration of Falkner would use a Hawlucha

  5. Old Japanese falconer's gear! I never would've been able to identify that. While I've always liked Falkner's look, I had no clue what about it was meant to communicate Flying-type beyond the use of sky blue.

I figured maybe it was meant to imply he along with the town places a lot of value in upholding tradition and preserving history, but that's more Ecruteak's thing.

  6. On one hand, the design is mildly cool and he could have been a great character. On the other hand, his team is SO LAME in game, like most Johto Gym leader. It's worst for him since he doesn't even use his own Pokémon, they were his father's (granted, maybe he's dead ; but come one, you're a JOHTO gym leader and you couldn't have a Hoot-Hoot?)

  7. You know what, yeah, I’ll accept that. Level 9 evolved bird, not a mistake from Gamefreak, Falkner is just that good at birds.

  8. We have reason to believe that the forced evolution sidequest was a much larger part of the narrative in gen 2 early in development, and Faulkner may have been involved in that.

  9. I always figured underleveled evos like this or Lance's dragonites or Morty's ghosts or similar were just the gym leaders/E4/Champions being skilled as a trainer in a different way. Like, their battle acumen isn't sharp otherwise they'd never lose, but they're really, REALLY good at promoting a pokemon's growth.

  10. There was a period of my life in elementary school where I based my whole personality around him because I just played my first pokemon game ever which is crystal version and Falkner's was my first gym ever, therefore he became the most memorable one. I made a facebook account using his name and his picture. He was so cool

  11. Honestly I can ignore the Pidgeotto, but no hoothoot? Now that is a crime I cannot forgive, it can even learn mud slap so it stays on theme with the gift tm
