I agree that the lightning is brutal this time around but there is a small comfort that everyone behind you will also lose their items.
It is only when you have just collected your items in the Knockout tour then getting struck by lightning is extremely painful. As other players mercilessly trample and shove you aside while you are helplessly watching them crossing the knockout gate.

Lightning doesn’t hit players behind you.
Isn’t the article wrong? I think lightning does not affect everyone. By my observations it only Harms those in front of you not those behind you
Lightning has been a pain since N64. This isnt news
No matter what, the lighting will strike just after I’ve collected a double item space. Every time without fail.
Lightning actually feels a lot less painful in World than older Mario Karts. The main benefit of lightning was always making everyone else small and slow so you had a chance to pass them, but in World it feels like everyone gets big again almost immediately.
They severly nerfed it I feel like. You return to form much faster now and you will never fall off the map due to it. And I actually prefer it. It means people behind me won’t have items anymore.
I agree, it’s always an untimely assault in the final seconds. But also extremely hilarious if you’re the one who crosses the finish line first as others recover from their near death electrocution.
The problem with lightning, and most other balancing issues with the game, really, are the double items and ability to chain into them. If you have lightning and can use it right before a double items box it becomes insanely strong.
Items should only disappear when the effect itself disappears (unlike lightning and stars) and double items should either not exist or only be available from double boxes which should be deliberately placed out of the way in the track in alternate paths.
I haven’t played Mario kart in probably 25 years tbh because I hate the whole item part of the game
Lightning is fine, it’s the boomerang that’s way too powerful in my opinion.
It’s the giant mushroom. I get squished by the giant characters right before the finish line every time.
The thing I hate most about it is that it is literally a jumpscare. Between the screen flashing, vibration and no warning, I jump everytime and I *hate* it
It’s awful when your bagging
They’re probably thinking it’s unbalanced for players without an item to get zapped and then passed by someone who didn’t lose their mushrooms and decided to use it because they also got zapped.
My only gripe with it is that everyone returns to normal at the same time, meaning if someone has a lead they’ll keep it, making the item more of a hinderence then a help
I love when people use lightning while I’m using a mega shroom, star or bullet bill. Win almost guaranteed.
Getting hit by lightning while you’re holding a horn and you see the blueshell on the minimap drives a man to do dark things.
In CPU modes it always hits me right when I get items in first and makes me lose everything and OH LOOK A BLUE SHELL JUST *HAPPENSSSS* TO BE STROLLING MY WAY NOW….
i usually quit match when hit n last lap!!
Yeah idk wtf everyones talking about it’s way more annoying in world, wife agrees as well. We feel it’s the strongest lightning has been honestly.
The blue shell is chill. I never get hit anymore I just rewind
> this time around
… Tf are you on about? This is literally the least punishing version we’ve had in several games, the amount of time of you spend under the effect has been greatly reduced, and losing items keeps being the same as it’s been for almost all the games.
No, its just the fact that double the amount of players is double the amount of item spam…
False. The true villain is the big mushroom powerup. Next time you race, pay attention to how much you are penalized when you get crushed by someone using it compared to getting hit by other items.
The real villain is the giant mushroom
The mega mushroom is the bane of my fucking existence.
I once had a lightning ready just as we’re about approach the next set of item boxes and boy it felt very good watching the people who just got them suddenly lose them.
Is it? Had you written this for 8DX, I would’ve agreed because in that game, that item made me want to jump out of a window, but in this game, it feels like a minor inconvenience. Sure, I lost my items, but that would’ve happened sooner or later because of that four-eyed koopa that I hate and my terrible racing skills, and I’m going to be small for like a second max. Anyway, the true villain is Lakitu
I’ve had so many knockout tours ruined by an asshole who deliberately holds onto lightning til the last item box on the 5th lap when I could’ve easily shot into 4th but lose cuz that fucker decides to be a dick in EVERY LOBBY now.
Nah, the true villain is losing your items if you fall off the track. Trying to do something crazy, getting pickup up, and losing your items is brutal.
I’m bad at the game, so my arch nemesis is the god damn feather. I just try to get rid of it as soon as possible from how situational it appears to be (again though, this is a skill issue)
It’s not any one item in particular, it’s the fact that there are 23 other racers, and probably 16 of them are going to have access to lightning bolts (and such like) at any given time, which means you’re not really “racing,” per se; you’re just getting knocked around like a pinball every few seconds.
MK has always had a “party” element to it. It’s never been a “sim” racer, but in the past, there was a better balance between racing, where skill determines your progression, and the party game items that inject a bit of random chance to the equation.
MK World lost the balance, and the items aren’t keeping things random or fun; they’re making it chaotic and tedious, imo. It feels like a roulette. You have a 1/24 chance of being close enough to the finish line at the end to luck your way into a win.
Did a Blue Shell write this
