It’s clear that gamefreaks #1 priority with megas is to capitalize off of the popularity of pokemon that are already well known and very strong, rather than giving megas to pokemon that could genuinely use the boost to remain relevant and have some new light shed on them. Here are some of my candidates of who I think would be best for new megas, and why! 🙂
Arbok – Arbok always felt like it was supposed to be more. Ekans is available as a prize at the game corner, which sort of makes you think it should be something a little more unique and sought after, but instead it was just kinda relegated to being a basic “team rocket poison type”. Even the other pokemon in this category, Weezing and Muk, have received love in the form of regional forms, and it was always weird to me that Arbok never got this treatment, since it always seemed like the most imposing of the three. Plus, i think there’s HUGE potential for different mega designs using the face on its hood. Could also use a dual dark or maybe dragon typing to give it better coverage
Dewgong – there are a LOT of mediocre water types in gen 1, it’s just really sad to see there be so many cool water types, but for 90% of them there’s no reason to use them above gyarados or lapras. Plus, the Ice type representation also is quite lacking in gen 1. A cool idea could be giving the mega snow warning, to give her potential as an aurora veil setter. Dewgong also has a very simple design that i think would be so easy to build upon with a mega design. Could give it some dragonair-esque pearls, or lean into its horn and go in a narwhal direction.
Ariados – Ariados was always one of those weirdos from gen 2 where it was just like. Why is this thing rare, it isn’t good? Obviously it’s no secret that the new pokemon in gen 2 were very lacking in terms of viability, and this is an example. The fact that Koga leads with it on his E4 team really makes it feel like it was supposed to be more. whether they beefed up its speed and attack to make it a more effective poison glass cannon, or gave the mega extra defenses to make it more of a support menace with things like sticky web and poison spikes, either would work. but as it is now, it just feels a little incomplete.
Mantine – yet another example of a gen 2 pokemon that feels like it should be better because of how rare it is, combined with the same problem from dewgong, which is that this guy isn’t horrible per se, but he’s just completely overshadowed by other water types, primarily it’s objectively better flying/water partner gyarados. Mantine is a good spdef tank, but that just isn’t the best niche for a typing that has a 4x weakness to electric types, one of the more common special attackers. I would love to see a mega that either covers its electric weakness in some way, like maybe giving it a prominent stinger on its tail that could act as a lightning rod and give it the lightning rod ability. If not, then I at least would like to see its mega lean even further into its tankyness by upping its base HP and maybe giving it an ability like gooey, which makes sense for a slimy manta ray, and would help it get a leg up speed-wise.
Delcatty – this poor pokemon is just not even remotely usable. I understand that it’s supposed to be more of a mascot , and that skitty and delcatty are meant to be more associated with the contest aspect of RSE, but cmon, she deserves at least a LITTLE viability. I propose to give her a fairy type mega, since retroactively-added fairy types are so lacking in gen 3, plus it would give some better defensive coverage. I actually wouldn’t want her attack stats to really increase much at all, but rather I would like to see her made into a fast spdef tank that uses its speed and toughness to act as a support unit for the team, using moves like screens, safeguard, and even access to revival blessing.
Chimecho – lastly is chimecho. basically, gardevoir is the main viable psychic type in gen 3, and other than that there’s… medicam I guess? (which btw, glad they have her a mega, that’s a good start) But Hoenn is just DESPERATELY lacking in good psychic types, and I think Chimecho deserves a little time in the sun. I think the design philosophy is really strong here, and you could easily design a mega by just adding more Shinto spiritual items, like perhaps omomori hanging from him, or adding more bells or perhaps even give him a hat that looks like the top to one of those little porcelain jars that goes with on a kamidana.
Basically, i’m tired of seeing megas added for every starter and ever pseudo that didn’t need it, when there are pokemon out there that could use the boost to catch up with the series power creep. What do you think? What are some megas you would like to see?
