Pokemon is an easy game at heart. Which is fine but sometimes they are a bit too simple that it becomes a button mashing simulator. Especially when it comes to the boss fights typcially gym leader where they are all type focused. They can usually be swept with a few super effective moves.
Another matter is when it comes to human vs computer opponents humans are inherently at an advantage. So most RPGs rig the fight in the computer's favour like extra health, damage, special moves or gimmicks to even the odds.
Pokemon for the longest time has played fair with opponents packing the same creatures and tools as the player maybe sometimes they have mons and moves you dont get until later but they are still accessable. So shoutout to these rigged battles with unique forms, custom pokemon, extra hp and stats or outright breaking the rules of the game. Really brings them in line with a proper RPG game

Would it be more appropriate to call this custom boss fights or boss fights that break traditional game rules
Totem Araquanid and Lurantis are a contender for the best fights in the series
The series has always been someone held back by its core design where everything is ‘equal’ – for 99% of battles across the series your opponent can only use things that you as a player could obtain and use yourself. This is **fantastic** for Players v Players, and is what allows the series to also be a competitive game, but it’s definitely caused problems over the years with core game difficulty.
It’s because of this that I actually really like it when the game ‘cheats’ like this, and I hope they do it more often because it’s led to some of the more memorable encounters across the series
I despise Eternamax Eternatus.
Neither you or Hop can contribute to the fight in a meaningful way. Your options are either spam A until the dogs beat him for you, or actively sabotage them so you lose.
Winning with your own power is simply not on the table.
I hope this kill this trend of what they did to Eternatus and Revavroom. I hate special forms that i can never catch, obtain, or use. Like, damnit. If i can make it bleed, i can use it on my team or don’t put it in the game!
