The inspiration is the Acromyrex Echinator, these ants that create armor made of minerals, resulting in this effect where a few spikes protrude. This is where the context for Mega comes in. Here, the Durant are being forced to mega evolve to counteract their difference from the Heatmor, creating this armor. In doing so, they fill up with these spikes that spread throughout their bodies and organs, damaging them, thus making their mission to defend their species a kind of suicide.
Another inspiration is torture and death sentences involving spikes, and since those sentenced to death are often prevented from speaking, I closed Durant's jaws so that, in order to protect their species, they even sacrifice their voice, becoming unable to speak.
Minor inspirations are the nailed clubs and King Solomon, where the ants were represented as a sort of deity who punished the self-centered.
