2025 Nintendo DLC hysteria: Has everyone forgotten 2017’s Expansion Pass?

Following yesterday's Direct it is not uncommon to see people claim Nintendo has suddenly begun holding back content to release as DLC later, or that Nintendo has suddenly become more greedy as a result…

…I would argue this is nothing new. We just came off a generation of Expansion Passes with DLC content that is often both sold and announced before the release of key first party games. Breath of the Wild was the first – its expansion pass was announced in February 2017, before the game even launched in March, and Nintendo was selling it before any substantial content was even ready to be released. They already had a roadmap of DLC content that would be released outside of the game, a game which had top tier digital pricing in Europe on launch day of 70 Euros and 60 GBP.

Expansion Passes continued throughout the Switch generation.

The difference now with DK Bananza and Pokemon Legends Z-A moving forward to Switch 2 is Nintendo is now selling that content much sooner.

Now I'm not saying that this makes it good, or better, just because Expansion Passes were already doing it. I only purchased a single expansion pass last generation, which should tell you what my own personal preferences are when it comes to expansion content.

But it does seem like a large portion of the community is forgetting their history once again here.

Now pricing is another topic entirely, as Nintendo certainly has a lot to prove with these DLC expansions, and I'm looking forward to reading impressions on both DLC packs.
