Pokemon

I like how since Alola, the starters have a slight highlight in games

Specifically in the Ultra games, there's this little scene of your starter emerging from the Poké Ball and staring at you, showing how far we've come and now we're at the highest peak of the region to become champion.

I know it's a bit silly, but it makes me feel closer to my starter and I like it more as a Pokémon.

In Sword & Shield, I wish there was a similar scene, since it's a game more focused on public battles. There could be a scene of your starter looking at you before facing Leon.

Scarlet & Violet has the starter climbing on your shoulder, reminiscent of Ash and Pikachu.

These are cute moments, which I personally would like to see in future games, especially like in Ultra Sun & Moon.

The starter scene right before the Pokemon League is very underrated! Wish they did something similar in other games, was so pleased to see Decidueye come out like that when playing through Ultra Moon years ago!

  2. USUM are probably my favorite Pokemon games, the detail, the polish, everything about it makes Pokemon feel like Pokemon.

I feel like GameFreak had so fun developing the game as so much passion was put into it.

  3. I’ve played through US twice and never seen that seem because I always box my starter. 🥲

  4. GrowingSage

That USUM scene was so great. I feel like Scarlett and Violet pushed it further… But with box art legendary.

Not complaining, just noting how I feel much closer to my Koraidan then I do to my starter in these games.

I was so mad at that USUM cutscene once.

Context: I soft resetted to get a shiny rowlet as my starter in Ultra Sun. When that cutscene played it just showed regular non shiny decidueye instead of shiny decidueye

  6. That scene in Ultra Sun with my Primarina in my Ultran Sun Hardcore Nuzlocke was brutal. She and I survived a lot of hardship, and we were going to avenge the fallen. And we did, we lost some members during the elite 4 and champion battle, but Primarina survived!

Its cute but I wish Scarlet and Violet had a moment like Sun/Moon’s Pokémon League. Instead your starter is locked away and the box legendary is given the focus for the final boss instead.

I’m fairly indifferent to Alola and think it’s one of the weaker gens.
But picking Rowlet and holding it up is a moment I won’t soon forget.

  9. i think not making the starters an even bigger focus is a massive mistake. you choose the starter, and aside from that for the most part the games never make an effort to make you feel attached to them. the anime and even some of the games make a point to show pretty much every major trainer has a dedicated partner, and i’d love to see that implemented with starters. i know of so many folks who just immediately replace their starters, and while i think you should be *allowed* to do that, i feel like it should be discouraged a bit. even if it’s just missing out on cute cutscenes with your starter

I chose Decidueye for my Ultra Moon play through and that moment was so amazing. From a cute Rowlet to a badass Decidueye

They’ve always celebrated the starter though. Oak mentions your starter when you beat the Champion all the way in gen 1

Yeah, sorta’ sucks how ultra alola’s the only game to show your and hau’s starters in cutscenes though.

hell, they even put the effort into showing all of your starter’s forms, so my werid ass could experience that hall of fame cutscene with a comicly small torracat cheering me on.

the other two starters you mentioned only get the cutscene when you choose ’em, and that’s it.

Actually turned them into your partners and I’m all here for it

It’s a cool moment and since they started adding scenes to make each starter more appealing showing off their personalities I’m surprised we haven’t had another moment like in the Ultra Games where your starter reflects on the journey too.

  15. GergoliShellos

I wonder what would happen in this cutscene if you don’t use your starter during playthrough. Would they show the first Pokémon in your party, or the Pokémon that has been in your party the longest?

There’s a moment in Black and White that makes me cry everytime. At the end of the game N reveals that he asked your starter if they wanted to be free and they said no. They wanted to go on the journey with you. It showed that not only did you choose your starter but they chose you as well.

  17. CommanderDark126

Yeah, the starters are intended to be treated like actual characters. Hence why they have shifted to more intricate and humanoid designs for the most part, its a solid change

  18. floggedlog

I’m not gonna lie I fucking despise those cut scenes

But mostly because I am resetting until I get my perfect starter

  19. UltimateIncineroar

USUM are genuinely the best games in the series. I miss that era.

  20. ASimpleCancerCell

The finale of USUM was almost incredible. Then they fumbled the landing by making you fight Hau instead of literally anybody else.

  21. DILF_Thunder

I’ve never gotten that starter scene tf 🥲

Geniunely curious what happens if you dont use the alola starter does the cutscene still happens?
(or during this part the starter isnt in party)

I played ultra sun and when my primarina looked at me i knew i was ready.

Seeing how far you’ve come on your adventure, with your first partner by your side, fills you with DETERMINATION.
