I started rewatching the original Pokemon anime about a year ago while eagerly awaiting the arrival of my first kid and something about revisiting an essential part of my childhood while anticipating my son’s childhood filled me with so much nostalgic joy and hope, I decided to make something to encapsulate it.

By my count, there are 30 references to the anime between the initial Indigo League season and some of the early episodes of the Orange Islands – if you see one that you remember or you have a favorite episode that got represented, please say so!

My major inspirations for this piece were Kathleen Fu’s work on the Magic Puzzle: The Awakened Artifacts, ByronB, who does amazing pieces on Pokemon and many other games and shares them on most social media platforms, and Kazunori Aihara- who illustrated the Let’s Find Pokemon books which I poured over hundreds of times as a kid.
I illustrated this on my iPad in Procreate, and between the main piece and the challenge prompt page it took me 57 hours.
