I hear a lot of people say that some of these mega evolutions should just be permanent buffs and that once Z-A is over they will go back to being underused, but a while ago I heard that the competitive battles would be done exclusively in Pokemon Champions which includes every unique mechanic from the mainline games. So I think switching to Champions is actually a great idea for keeping those niche Pokemon that rely on specific gimmicks consistently useable.
