I was playing legends ZA today. I wanted a shiny pokemon because I saw its cool new mega. Within 15 minutes of hunting it with one hand while watching Breaking Bad, I found it.
I used this method that yields 5-6 shinies per hour for any pokemon that can spawn naturally (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPEzqALlAzs). When I heard the sparkle, I wasn’t shocked or relieved. I felt nothing really. It’s just so easy now that it’s not even special anymore. It says nothing about the time, effort, or luck that you put into the game. Just that you had 15 minutes of spare time.
This, compared to shiny hunting in pokemon sword from six years ago, is a very different experience. Back then, I remember hunting for a single shiny slowpoke for days (Masuda method, no charm). When I found it, I absolutely freaked out. Maybe I was just younger, but I remember feeling a sense of accomplishment. It took effort, and the result was more enjoyable.
Today, hunting is so easy and that joy is just gone. I’m not wondering when I’ll get the shiny, I’m expecting it. When I get one faster than expected, I’m mildly pleased, but it’s nothing huge.
Does anyone else feel this way?

When I was a child and had plenty of free time, I didn’t mind endlessly breeding pokemon to get shinies. Now that I’m an adult with 1-2 hrs of free time per day I don’t want to waste my time just for bragging rights with the handful of people who actually care. I just want to catch a cool little guy in the color scheme I prefer.
I mean, a lot of that is just a side effect of the change in format. The odds haven’t really changed, but the volume of Pokemon encountered has gone up DRAMATICALLY. If you really think you miss the “gold old days” you can always shiny hunt a legendary and report back in 1-6 weeks.
I’m surprised, in just less than 3 hours in, I find a shiny gold Magikarp swimming near me, wow.
Man, people just find anything to be negative about.
Weren’t people complaining how autosave meant shiny hunting was impossible in ZA? So it’s simultaneously too easy and too hard?
Shiny hunting has always had methods of making it easier. People said shiny pokemon in XY didnt mean anything either cause of chain fishing. If a shiny is valuable to you because of the time and work you spent to do that you should do that. If you just want a different version of a pokemon with a sound affect you should hunt it however you like. Nobody is making you use methods that you dont find fun and whats even the point if youre not having fun, you dont have to make everything so efficient that it takes all the fun away.
im surprised the sentiment towards your post is seemingly negative, i wholeheartedly agree
I think this applies to SV/legends arceus as well
So you specifically followed a guide on how to shiny hunt in an optimal way, and are surprised/complaining that it resulted in getting a shiny easily??
Also you can still have fun even hunting via optimized methods instead of just running around aimlessly, it’s just a matter of not getting too in your head about how rare/difficult something is or not feeling “worth it”, there’s never been any set “worth” to shinies after all, it’s just what You make of the shinies you get.
You should start playing PokeMMO, here we have shiny odds of 1/30000 🙂
You’d think most people who care about shinies would have them by now
Wish I was this lucky. I reset Zone 4 over and over, and after 6 hours I finally Spawned the Shiny Gastly.
I have 2 shiny alphas without hunting. Odds HAVE to be higher
