What? None of that title makes any sense.
MrDitkovichNeedsRent
The reason we recognize him is because he’s one of the few developers who are actually vocal with the community and has genuine passion in their craft. It’s hard to find devs like him that aren’t from indie games or smaller studios. Most devs, especially from triple A studios are usually silent and corporate

That seems kind of contradictory from Sakurai… I thought he LOVED promoting himself considering he did two hour-long Directs for a Kirby spin-off game.

Sakurai… idk how to tell you this but I think its a little late for that
Jokes aside I actualy do feel its important to look at who made stuff, especially for things you enjoy. We all should remember that entertainment doesn’t just spring from the ground but is made by real people.
MattofCatbell
I can see Sakurai not wanting to be put up on a pedestal, wanting his games to speak for themselves instead of everyone viewing them positively just because his name is on it.
Also game development requires a lot of people working together, so giving all the credit just to Sakurai would no doubt make him uncomfortable.

I didn’t read the article but the worst interpretation of this could be don’t look at who’s making your games because their material conditions don’t matter.
The industry is extremely abusive to their labor force and it would be very convenient for big companies if we all didn’t think about that. The people who make our games need unions, and need our solidarity.

Here’s looking at you, Sakurai.

I’m perceiving you! I’m perceiving you!

If I’m understanding the article correctly, it’s not so much that he doesn’t want us to know who’s creating the games, but rather letting interviews and outside stuff take away from the game.
Sakurai the person is just as popular as the games he creates, becoming sort of an internet personality (even though that probably wasn’t his intention) through interviews, YouTube videos, and his many memable moments.
Luckily, most people love Sakurai, but not every game creator has such beloved fans or does well with interviews and interacting in online spaces. Also, people might come to like Sakurai the person more than the games he creates.
Idk, I’m bad at explaining and may have misunderstood.

There are many new games coming out all the time, so I do look at who made them, because that helps me filer and find quality games. If I enjoyed what a designer or a studio did in the past, I’m likely to enjoy their new games, too.
It’s the same with books for me. I don’t read books only from authors I know, but if I look for a new read and I want to be relatively certain that I’ll like it, I fall back on writers whose previous work I enjoyed.

Stop perceiving you? He’s just like me fr

While on one hand this is good to prevent certain creators from gaining undue influence or perceived “authority”, it is also important for the developers and others who need such things in resumes when they often get laid off after a game is done.
Either because they are no longer needed, they are getting screwed out of bonuses and other rewards, or the company needs a better quarterly report.

Why even put credits in games then? The people who made them simply are not important.
AlmanacWyrm
I partially disagree since knowing whos making what games and knowing which departments work on specific franchises can help people understand how Nintendo works as a company.
It would also help limit unnecessary hatred for Fire Emblem since to people who know nothing about this will just blame Fire Emblem for preventing games like a new F Zero game from releasing even though that’s not how that works.

You literally hyped up who the director was at the end of the Kirby reveal Trailer💀💀💀

Masahiro, you aren’t the reason I play your games. I play your games because of the effort put into them. You just so happen to be the one putting the effort in. In fact, you appear to be one of the only developers who still gets it.
Iwata would be proud of your contributions to the video game industry and its furthered success.
Rothgardius
I tried to get into it, but this game requires a regular dose of aderall and caffeine.

Mr. Sakurai. Respectfully. No.
I will continue to respect, acknowledge, and appreciate your work. So there!
Roam1985
Nah, screw that. We can see Air Riders is a more completely built game than the others I just play.
That’s cause he makes a damn complete game. Just like he did with Smash and Kid Icarus.
And I’m gonna perceive the hell out of that.
Sanity0004
Now watch my third hour long explanation on the second button in Kirby Air Riders…

I agree, one of the worst things to happen to gaming was when we started treating developers like they are celebrities. Sometimes it seems we are way more invested in what happens behind the scenes than enjoying the game itself
RipMcStudly
He just doesn’t want us to find out that the 500 top players in online will all be controlled by him…simultaneously.
ChiLLaX_72
I’m sorry Sakurai how can I not perceive you when the stuff you make is well… so you? I feel like I’m finally connecting the dots with like game design philosophy or at least the core of it. Any of the smash or Kirby games you look at and see his thought process and artistry in his way. The way he designs a menu, the UI, the challenge boards, options and settings, having a variety of modes and customization. It’s all very, Sakurai-ian. In visual elements too, the way the menu icons are set up, Smash Melee and original Kirby Air Ride look very similar in their menus. Him and his team go all out and do a great job, he bleeds onto the page or game.
Yacobo93
He might be the worst possible person to be saying this. Especially since the literal first piece of information about air riders was that its been directed by him and theres a couple hour videos of a camera pointing at him explaining the game.
Bluescreen_Macbeth
Holy shit, that guy is 55. He looks so young to have created Kirby. Good for him.

No. In fact, look who made them in great detail.
By that I mean don’t fall for “From the studio that made X” BS, because chances are 80% of people left that team since their last great game.
