On a daily basis, I switch my buddy to 20 different pokemon and for each one: I take a snapshot, feed berries, play with, and battle a leader 3 times to get a total of 6 hearts under Today’s Activities. Occasionally the hearts under Today’s Activities will disappear, like in the screenshots above where I originally had 5 hearts but then they disappeared. Then I need to interact with the buddy again to get them to appear again.
