Pokemon

Today I learned that future games know if a Pokémon came specifically from a GB/GBC game

At this point I think everyone knows that future games track every Pokémon's region of origin if they were transferred.
But what I didn't know is that it knows whether the Pokémon came from an original Game Boy/Color game, or if it came from a remake of said Game Boy game.
Both Heracross and Crobat technically came from the same region, but only the one who came from the Game Boy has the "How nostalgic!" text at the end of the paragraph.

And no, this isn't a way to differentiate if a Pokémon came from an original game or a remake, it only applies for Pokémon that came specifically from Game Boy games.
Because from Hoenn onwards, no Pokémon has that text. It doesn't matter if you played the 3rd Gen games on the GBA or on the 3DS. Same for the 4th Gen games.

Mainly due to VC releases that Gen 1 and 2 got, so that’s also why Gen 3 and 4 don’t get the same as there’s no VC for them.

And IIRC in Home you see the region info instead say “Kanto region (the good old days)” or “Johto region (the good old days)”

  2. 2009/2010 15+ year old games aren’t old enough to be nostalgic I guess

That’s such a fun detail for them to include! Kind of reminds me of how you could get a special poster for your secret base in ORAS if you transferred in a Pokémon from RSE, but on a smaller scale.

This isn’t the only way to tell where a Pokemon comes from.

Starting from XY, every game has something called an “[Origin Mark](https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Origin_mark)”, an icon shown in the summary of a Pokemon that signifies where it came from. While you still need the region name shown to further deduce a Pokemon’s origin, the Origin Mark makes it easy to tell at a glance. For example, FRLG and LGPE both say “the Kanto region”, without any secondary context like with the VC games. If the Pokemon has the following mark:

…then it came from Let’s Go. If no mark appears where one should be, then it came from FRLG.

Dont you have to transfer all pokemon through modern games? How can it tell?

They also get a gameboy icon for newer games outside of the Legends games.

Really?! I’m gonna try this. I was sad when my oldest pokemon no longer specified the place they came from. I lost quite a few along the way, but I should still have some pokemon from 2011…

wait, isn’t it impossible to transfer games from Gameboy Games to the “Advanced generation” games?

Does this apply to the 3DS ports of games like Crystal or just the physical version?

Oh wow, I wish we can do the transfer, I have this gardevoir on my Ruby (My first game) that I absolutely dont want to lose to cartridge rot or something. I dont think its possible now.

  11. My fave thing about the VC transfers are the little gameboy icon they have

Yeah, I still have my brothers Blaziken from 2003, it’s got every single championship ribbon from then till now. And max beauty contest, friendship, and footsteps ribbon possible. It’s lowkey my pride and joy

I also have Pokemon from XD Gale of Darkness too

  13. Considering you can’t get Pokémon from GB or GBC, this isn’t true.

  14. Gen 1 and 2 origin data was added because of the 3DS VC releases.

If you bring a Pokémon migrated from RGBY to the Game Freak office in Sun and Moon, the director has a little quip about Gen 1 development.

If you bring a Pokémon from GSC to the office in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, you get a little quip about Gen 2 development.
