I chose Alolan Raichu because I just wanted to practice drawing her. Additionally I just find Psychu to be a great fourth wheel for the Alolan Starters. I also chose the shiny version because I just like the chocolatey brown of the shiny more.
What are NR-Z forms mechanically?
When a Pokémon uses their signature Z-Move they get a stat boost that affects them in percentages, not a set amount of stat points. The “total percentage amount” must always be 100%, for example, Psychu’s Speed and Special Attack get buffed by 35%, and her Physical Defense gets boosted by 30%. This is to reflect the stat buff that Beast Boost gives the Ultra Beasts, since stat modifiers work on fractions are percentages.
What about the designs?
I wanted to make each NR-Z form reflect a Pokémon’s stat spread based on what it can do to reflect the more cartoony feel of the Alola region (especially given the anime). For example, I made Psychu a bit more aerodynamic and elongated her tail reflecting her speed, as well as taking her cheek pouches and putting those on more spots on her body, as well as a hypnotic swirl on her belly, reflecting her Special Attack.
