This line is based on the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and the very old Appalachian practice of knitting (and various other hand-sewing crafts). The entire line vaguely follows the progression of fabric into cloth – first it's harvested from plants into rough material, refined (Spawdle's entire design is meant to look like a spool of thread), and then used to create more complex things, specifically quilts.
In terms of visual motifs, the antennae on Patchepillar and Gossamere are akin to knitting needles. As mentioned, Spawdle's silhouette is like a spool of thread. Gossamere's entire design is based on the idea of a grandmother and her quilt – it's bug-eyes look like glasses, the yellow stripe on the head becomes something like hair, and the lower sections of the wings mimic balls of yarn. It's body is also meant to look like it's wearing pajamas.
Gossamere has Regenerator because I like the idea of it "stitching up" the damage to its wings while out of battle. Also, while designing Gossamere, I noticed that for some reason, butterfly Pokemon don't have 6 limbs.
