Like I promised, I'm back with another Fakémon evolution line for one of my favs, Mimikyu! Tried displaying the full evo line together with rough relative size approximations.
First up is Mimikyu's prevolution:
Mozotto (モゾット)
(From the onomatopoeia モゾ (creeping/squirming) and ゾット (shiver/creapiness))
Ever since I saw what Mimikyu looks like under the disguise in official concept art, really wanted to see it as a prevolution. Didn't want it to just be it's main body though, so came up with an idea incorporating the process of creating its Pikachi disguise and elements of voodoo. The result was a smaller/younger version of Mimikyu's maim body using a sewing needle to take apart pokedolls as material for its future disguise (alluded to with the exposed stuffing). While on the move, it can only hold one thing at a time, so generally uses whatever plush it's carrying as an ad hoc pincushion. It also generally hids behind whatever it's holding. The sewing needle stabbed into a pokedoll also gives it a unique voodoo inspired ability (I have yet to flesh it out, would love suggestions!).
Then we have Mimikyu's evolution:
Matsugao (マツガオー)
(From 祭る (to deify/enshrine) also serves as a double entendre for the word festival (祭り), and the onomatopoeia ガオ (roar))
As Mimikyu's main body grows larger, it looks for another, arguably more popular, Pokémon to disguise itself as, ultimately picking Charizard. While Mozotto has one "shadow arm" and Mimikyu has two, Matsugao has several. Two extend out mimicking wings, but the others remain inside the disguise, operating the head and body.
The main inspiration were the costumes used in Dragon and Lion dances. You can see references to both in the design. The artist, Monshop, came up with the amazing idea to flip Mimikyu's tail and add a flame on the end. He also suggested making the stomach match the color of Mimikyu, which ended up working perfectly when we decided the real eyes should stay lower (the original idea were for the nostrils to be it's eyes but it blended in a little too well). The "shadow arms" serve as its wings, but to maintain a reference to Charizard's wings and to create a plausible gap for the arms to extend out from, we added flaps reminiscent of the Lion Dance's design, with the colors matching Charizard's wings and more of Mimikyu's main color. As the crooked neck suggests, it maintains the same ability as Mimikyu. Was considering upgrading it so it has to be hit twice, possibly no damage on the first hit and half damage/sturdy type effect on the second. Would again love to hesr suggestions! Visually, I'd imagine the head would flop on the first hit and then the neck would flop down further on the second.
Next up is my all time fav, Stonjourner! Have a lot of ideas I'd like to do for it 😊
