I can’t seem to decide on whether to get Pokemon FireRed or LeafGreen. I’m mainly deciding on what Pokemon are available in each game but there’s so many good Pokemon in those 2 games

LeafGreen was my first Pokemon game. Kinda made me feel like a contrarian because all of my friends had FireRed. So even after 20 years, I gotta stay loyal.

I *mostly* prefer the stuff available in FireRed to the stuff available in LeafGreen, particularly in those exact games / that generation of games; the move pools all kinda suck but for example Scyther, Arcanine, and the Buzz are all way more usable than their equivalents. Especially with Scizor available post-game.
I prefer both of Slowbro and Starmie to either of Golduck and Cloyster, but both FR options are good *enough* that it’s not a huge problem (and Blastoise and Gyarados and Lapras and Tentacruel are available in both).
But Starmie is *so good* that it kinda swings me back towards LeafGreen again. Most of my vanilla FRLG experience these days is nuzlocking and you can guarantee a Staryu encounter, and Starmie can solo the whole of the E4 without overlevelling them to do it, it’s so good.

I am playing FireRed because I let a “friend” borrow my FireRed in high school over 20 years ago and he never gave it back.
To this day, it is the only cartridge missing from my collection and I use it as a reminder never to lend out anything I intent to cherish, and to lend only to people whom I explicitly trust.

If you ever want a complete Gen 3 Dex (if the others come to the eshop), you should know the Slowpoke line is exclusive to Leaf Green and not obtainable in any of the other GBA or GameCube games.

As far as viability is concerned, leaf green wins in a landslide. Slowbro and starmie are all you really need to see to know that. The only one that is a big loss is arcanine. However, this doesn’t really matter for casual story mode – win with your favorites.
