Curious if there are any other games that shared the same rebrand/recycle process? Really interesting.
I know of a Peter Sellers movie, I think it's A Shot in the Dark, that was rebranded to fit as a Pink Panther film. But this is the first instance I'm aware of where it happened with a game.

South Park GBC was reskinned into a Marry Kate and Ashely game after the licensing deal fell through.
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap was reskinned to a Turma da Mônica game in Brazil.
Though a difference between them and SMB2 is SMB2 did start as a experiment for a Mario sequel with vertical gameplay, then was fully made into Doki Doki, before being made into SMB2.

Sunsoft had a Superman game on NES that never saw the light of day. At some point that game became Sunman, where Sunman was a generic stand-in for Supes, but Sunman never released either way.
If I recall, Journey to Silius (also by Sunsoft) on NES was originally meant to be a Terminator game.

There was this one Game Boy game that, depending on the region, was either a Ghostbusters, Garfield, or Mickey Mouse game.
Star Fox Adventures comes to mind as well… Was originally a game called Dinosaur Planet!

When Capcom was early in development for what they planned to be Resident Evil 4, the game started to morph into something that felt less and less like it was a fit for the franchise.
Instead of scrapping it they kept going and it became Devil May Cry, while the actual RE4 started as a separate project

Panel de Pon turned into Tetris Attack on the SNES, and Puyo Puyo became Kirby’s Avalanche or Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine depending on the platform
