What if Sceptile got a new signature Hidden Ability?

I know most people suggest just swapping Sceptile's Attack and Special Attack stats, but GameFreak have never made a stat change that drastic, so I wanted to come up with an idea that did not change its stats.

With Specialist, now Sceptile can use the movepool it already has instead of just throwing a ton of new moves onto it just for parity. (Though some new moves would still be welcome)

Question is, which idea would be better for Sceptile? Keeping the moves physical would allow Sceptile to run mixed sets for free, which would be useful. But outright converting them into special moves would lead to a strong niche and some very unique interactions.

Let me know your thoughts!

Bro this would make him great if he can use his special attack stat with physical moves. I’m all for this, but idk if buffs happen often to pokemon historically unfortunately

Very cool idea! I think it fits Sceptile well and would make him much more viable. Lightning Rod as a Grass/Dragon type is just so…useless xD

Specialist is a cool concept, but it has to be option A.

Option B mostly just turns Sceptile into a special attack sweeper at the cost of its ability slot entirely, and still get walled by Blissey.

Option A says I get to be mixed without sacrificing stats that most mixed attackers do.

  4. I mean regardless of the context here i just like the idea of that ability. Sceptile really did suffer from the Physical Special Split.

If this were to be implemented, I feel like it’d be type specific. For example only grass type physical moves would use the special attack stat

I think a better design for the ability is for it to swap physical and special for attack calculation only.

So physical moves would still hit physical defense, but use the special attack,

While special moves would still hit special defense using physical attack.

This would achieve a lot of the same thing, but would allow it to be used on more mons and can combine with abilities like skill swap to give opponents problems like cutting their main attack stats.

If the first suggestion is to make the physical moves work like Psyshock does, I would be in favor of that

While Sceptile does have a wide pool of physical moves, the special moves it does learn have much higher base power.

So even with the Specialist ability, those coverage moves won’t hit that hard even if the Special Attack stat used. Leaf Blade < Leaf Storm is the most obvious example.

To further strengthen them, the ability should also add a damage bonus to make them worthwhile.

I‘m not even sure if even Huge Power can offset the low/mid base power of most of its physical moves.

I never understood it, that Sceptile is a special attacker in the first place.
EVERYTHING says the opposite. His signature move, his design, how he is in the anime, his move pool.

It should get Sharpness honestly. Leaf Blade is Sceptile’s signature move. Every Pokedex description describes how it has sharp blades that cut stuf down. It would make the most sense for it.

  11. I like the idea, but what if it was similar to download in the sense that moves will refer to whichever stat is higher?

I like the idea of the ability, it seems weird having its attack stat basically nullified (i guess it would only matter for confusion or Foul play). I know this happens to basically any attacker, were the stat they dont use could effectively be just 0 and it would be the same, but it seems weird to have an ability that intentionally makes a whole stat meaningless

At least his ability isnt damp

Lightning rod is not the most universal ability, but it allows a lot of versatility in doubles. It can cover for water types, or you can run something fast like jolteon with discharge and get the special boost while also hitting and potentially paralyzing the opponents.
