Pokemon

Why is Mr. Mime not waking up?

I knew the "secret" mechanic that playing the Pokeflute worked as an "Awakening" for every pokemon on the field but… It wasn't working for me?

Then it hit me.

Mr. Mime's ability is Soundproof, which makes him virtually DEAF.

My guy wasn't hearing me playing the pokeflute! He couldn't be affected by it!

Fucking crazy I was 30 years old when I learned you could use the pokeflute to wake up your pokemon in battle

  2. Loudreds-Trainer

If he can’t hear the flute how on earth does he follow commands?

“The Poké Flute can awaken any sleeping Pokémon…”

“…with the sole exception of Soundproof Mr. Mime, of course.”

I knew about the pokeflute from back in the RBY days

I didn’t know they programmed it to interact with abilities like *soundproof* though.

  5. TheFantasticSticky

Wow I didn’t know Soundproof blocks the Flute.

  6. GhalanSmokescale

Today I learned that Soundproof blocks the PokéFlute…

Even more hilarious, if outroar is in use they can still fall asleep.

Turn up your sound, maybe he can’t hear it

Wow that’s honestly a big find I’ve never heard of this in my 10+ years on the fandom.

I found out because of this post that Soundproof only blocks the flute’s ability to wake sleeping Pokémon in battle. [`FieldUseFunc_UsePokeFlute`](https://github.com/pret/pokefirered/blob/69e963fbb844afc8124ba343894f2e9aeef5c4aa/src/item_use.c#L359-L385) has the same effect as using an Awakening on each Pokémon in your party, whereas [the code executed when using the flute in battle](https://github.com/pret/pokefirered/blob/69e963fbb844afc8124ba343894f2e9aeef5c4aa/src/battle_script_commands.c#L6157-L6208) checks their ability.

Sound proof is the perfect ability for a mime.

Inner Focus would be another good one.

    Putting the “MIMI” in MIMIEN

  14. Azurnight

You need to PRETEND to play the pokeflute. Duh

Pokemon has so many deep mechanics that are unbelievably niche, that it takes years for it to be seen in a battle. Soundproof Mr Mime being one of these things! Like how I recently learned that metronome is way more powerful on two-turn, single hit moves like Fly. It calculates that the ‘charge up’ turn was successful, so then makes the resultant attack more powerful, then again on consecutive uses.

TIL that you can use pokeflute in battle

Lol. Thats some Ash Ketchum move right there

Damn, been playing Pokemon 30 years and still learning new things everyday. Love it

Wow, props to the developers. They really thought of everything. I always thought it was cool that some abilities worked outside of battle (intimidate as a pseudo-repel, magnet pull attracting steel types etc.) but this is clever at.

I’m honestly surprised they programmed Soundproof to be immune to an item in the bag that can’t be held.

  22. thegangplan

the soundproof interaction is such a deep cut, i love that they actually accounted for that. poor mr mime just sleeping through the concert, completely oblivious

  23. Recent_Position_328
