To get hearts from battling your buddy pokemon has to be fed and on the screen before you battle
To get battle hearts you can have your buddy in the team when attacking a gym and it gets a heart per pokemon you fight, it's trivial tbh.
Also, when your buddy goes from Great buddy to Ultra buddy (level 2 to level 3), it will give you a souvenir only as the gift right away.
I thknk you need to feed your buddy before they give you hearts for battling.

Make sure you feed your buddy and walking around the map and then battle, that should give you the hearts
I also dont think you can earn hearts with ditto when trying to battle. You cant use ditto with battling.
I’ve come across no hearts with battling a buddy Ditto as well.
My Mimmy aint available for f8ghting any Boss. Normal Rockets only. No raid, No PvP, such a BS Move.. Not any Mimmy is available.
I have over 1000 best buddies in the game and many times I seen the Buddy hearts disappear. They do come back when I bring them out and do another interaction like petting them
I have been experiencing that glitch too with my buddy Pokemon. They're in my party while I battle gyms and they sometimes don't register hearts. And yes I fed them and they were walking around next to me.

You have to feed your buddy, if it's not fed, the only hearts you can get is for snapshots and for playing with it. But no battling or KM hearts.

Souvenirs normally show up every other day. Items happen every day. All my best buddies except my dailys have souvenirs. I check my buddies I'm trying to best until they get a gift. Swap to one with a souvenir. Open it. Wait for a gift to appear with items. Don't open. Swap to other buddies and give them all gifts. Do my dailys. Sometimes the time lines up, so that none of my Pokemon will receive item gifts until it's close to midnight. So I try and give all my best buddies souvenirs back when I can't receive items those days.
I was afraid that if I swapped to a different buddy, maybe the gift would disappear. Good to know how that works!
I love Mimikyu. Was my favourite Pokemon in Sun/Moon. I wish we could at least use it in gyms already

Remember one buddy can only give you 18 presents so you need at least 2 for 30
