Editor’s Opinion:
I have to give credit to Pokemon Masters EX for the director and actors attempting British accents for Sword and Shield characters, given the Galar region vernacular was based on the United Kingdom. This is especially true of playable character Gloria. While unconfirmed, Gloria was first played by an actor highly suspected to be Della Saba: a British-American voice actor. I can certainly say her first actor feels very natural, there’s a certain British charm in her performance that feels genuinely believable. Her more cutesy, youthful tone fits the character well, and she portrays the kind, eager, brave and mischievous aspects well. Overall: Gloria’s first actor delivers a solid performance.
Sometime in 2021, Gloria’s actor was recast and has been played by Stephanie Southerland since. Southerland hits a few beats of Gloria’s first actor well, though if you listen with a keen ear, Southerland uses a dialect closer to British RP while her first voice actor had a general southern English accent. You can tell this by the first actor’s sharper vowels and consonants, particularly their “o”s, “e”s and “t”s, while with Southerland it’s more masked, and her accent doesn’t feel as natural as a result. Still, Stephanie Southerland also delivers a fine performance.
Gloria’s first actor is certainly the definitive of the two for me, she sounds more natural and her more youthful quality fits Gloria better.
*BONUS Fan-cast: I would re-cast the role with Della Saba 😉
