Pokemon

As a new competitive player, VP cost for move changes is creatively restrictive and punishing

Changing your nature? Sure that's fine.

Swapping the ability? Alright makes sense.

Altering your stats? Understandable.

Switching up your moves is where I draw the line, and I'll explain why:

I brought in some pokes from ZA, and some of them are totally unusable/bricked until I change moves that are considered 'illegal'. I can't even bring these pokes back into ZA to change them for free, because Champions saves what they had when they came in…

_Even more importantly_, there are SO MANY combinations of moves to try. Unlike natures and even abilities, moves are core to experimenting and trying out new things. Trying something new that might not work well? Well prepare to get punished for doing that, because loses give you less VP, so be prepared to lose 3 matches to get the points to change just one move. Creativity, experimenting or _literally just being new and trying to figure things out_ is totally punished.

I don't know if anything will change, but it sure won't if nothing is said, so I wanted to at least start the conversation on this. I feel like it's the biggest issue with enjoying the game. I am not even interested in moving my ZA pokes over anymore because it's just going to be extra hassle, not to mention I don't even want to try new teams or ideas to see what works..

The game gives out VP like it’s nothing. In a month everyone will be sitting on a mountain of it with nothing to spend it on. This won’t be much of an issue as you play.

If you think requiring VP is bad, let me introduce you to heart scales.

Its weird because all it encourages people to do is to build their Pokemon outside of Champions, to avoid the VP cost. So I’ll be building mine in Scarlet or ZA and then transferring them when everything I need is already set up. And then if VP starts to get tight and I need a.. I dunno… Froslass with a different moveset, I’ll go back to Scarlet and build a different one with a different set of moves.

  4. Fried_puri

Not letting you send them back to ZA to edit the moves is some crazy work. What’s the logic behind that? Why are the moves locked in on the first transfer?

  5. Always though that switching out moves should be easy and free in all the games in any context. There’s just so much to consider and so many interactions that aren’t immediately obvious.

  6. Pokemathmon

Haven’t played yet, but does it allow you to freely swap back to a move you previously learned in champions? Like if I buy hyper beam, then replace it, will hyper beam still have a vp cost for that pokemon?

  7. Mr_OwO_Kat

i’m gonna be honest i spent like 2-3 grand just changing 1 move a few different times on the 2 same pokemon and i still had enough for everything i wanted. you can make the 250 vp by winning 1 battle.

  8. BadNurseJoy

You get a lot of training tickets to start which you can use 1 of them for a complete Pokemon build. Use those first (at the commencement training screen press x to use them instead of vp)

  9. SuperMochaCub

I dunno if I agree, VP seems to be extremely obtainable and yes you say the get you early on but even bringing a pokemon from home (which I use for free) I got 5k VP I think

Wow, a f2p game is predatory and built to drain your money dry without actual fun payoff, who’d have thought? If you’re really that starved for a competitve pokemon scene, there are plenty more without predatory design and are actually fun to play. It’s amazing to see how Nintendo consistently continues to bamboozle us.

Pokemon had a real opportunity to create a legitimate, fun battle simulator to be used by everyone. The need for excessive monetization hampered the overall appeal of this app.

Putting a cost to these things limits creativity and makes people less inclined to take risks or try something new. It also limits people who might not want to play through a whole game just to be able to compete competitively but may like the idea of battling by itself.

Sure, when you complete scarlet and violet you will be set up to build whatever pokemon you like but if you don’t want to do that or can’t do that for whatever reason, you’ll most likely pass on this for being too restrictive.

Unless there is some crazy hidden value to this app, I’ll most likely stick to the mainline games or when more pokemon are added to battle with.

I haven’t had any issues with VP cost yet. I have 3 teams worth of fully trained-up mons. 6 from the free mons they give (i returned the gengar lol), 6 from scarvio/pogo, and 6 from the ranch. Between free ranch tickets and huge challenge bonuses i had no issues training up all of them AND getting a new piece of clothing and animation for every slot

  13. I dunno when I started I had enough vp to fully kit out my starting team, then played a few matches and had enough vp to re kit a new pokemon to change my team, prices are not at all expensive to train pokemon unless you want 6 new pokemon every match, you get enough from the tutorials to get yourself started up then need to play just a bit to unlock more, I made an incineroar in pokemon scarlet this morning before release, it took me way longer to get fire blast tm and the materials to sort it all out rather than play 5 games and basically have it finished, this doesn’t even touch on the coupons you earn by playing to get free changes

  14. SilverScribe15

Yeah, I guess it’s to encourage customizing the moveset in the regular games, where there’s a lot.more ease of use

  15. Ok_Candidate_1279

Yea, go to Showdown and experiment there, Champions will just the performative platform

  16. I don’t get why training a move with VP doesn’t just buy you the move forever, and you can switch between the ones you have already

  17. TheAwesomeMan123

Game Freak has what is arguably the single most successful competitive scene in Gaming that people will play endlessly without incentive other than the simple fun of battling and trying new things.

And then Game Freak spends its entire creative input coming up with ways to just piss you off and wish you didn’t even want to play it. IVs, EVs, VPs. Just repeated annoying irksome drags on what would be just a simple and fun PvP experience.

  18. Key_Amazed

I have so many tickets that I haven’t had to waste VP on training my Pokemon yet. Also helps that I did most of my training in the games I found them. The fact I can just put them into SV or Legends and use their easy to access features for training instead is a godsend

  19. RegularStrong3057

I feel like the VP is pretty reasonable. Full disclosure, I did buy the starter pack, but I’ve only used two training tickets and one of the team tickets from the bonus. But even then I still have 17k VP and I already have a team that I enjoy and have confidence in. I’ve only made it to Great with it, but that’s because I have to work 😮‍💨

If you don’t go crazy with training and take a thoughtful and methodical approach, you’ll be fine. Just don’t switch up your team every couple of battles and you’ll be fine.

  20. doortothe

Thought experiment: would it be better or worse to be able to swap for free BUT you have to buy the move first?

  21. SeasonalChatter

You got 30 VP for forfeiting. You get 100 for losing normally fwiw

  22. So many whingers. Just play the fucking thing or dont

  23. Hot-Strength-6003

I found it fine honestly. You get more vp then you know what to do with so long as you don’t by cosmetics

  24. vanillaicex3

Cost less than a single win to change a move

  25. thebearsnake

They definitely want to funnel people into the mainline games. For what it’s worth, SV is hands down the best training experience Pokemon has probably ever had.

And historically speaking, it’s fine compared to old ways of training honestly. It’s still absurdly fast overall if nothing else even compared to sv

  26. Nightwalker065

I made one team and just stick with it, 300+ VP for winning and even if I lose I get 75. Plus yoy don’t go down a tier so it’s easy to farm.

  27. tedious58

This game has such a low entry point for new competitive players compared to even Scarlet and Violet that they can take my VP to change moves.

  28. matt2313

At the very least they should make it free to relearn a move that the Pokémon already knew in the past (unless this is already the case and I just didn’t notice)

  29. ShrimpBisque

I think needing VP for changing moves makes sense (although the cost could be lower), but replacing moves that are literally unusable should be free. The current system definitely needs tweaking.

  30. Mysticwarriormj

Once you start battling it isn’t that bad but yeah.
