Hey guys, I wanted to share my Bug-type Champion party. When I was putting this together, I focused on the overall balance, design and making sure the types didn't overlap so they could actually cover each other. The main goal was to prevent players from just cheesing the win with Fire, Rock, or Flying moves, or simply using Stealth Rock to sweep the whole team.
Scolipede
I focused on giving it coverage moves to counter its weaknesses. Since it struggles against Rock, Fire, and Flying, I went with Aqua Tail and Rock Slide. I thought about using Protect to stall for Speed Boost, but honestly, that felt a bit too "competitive meta" for an NPC. It didn't feel like something a Champion would do, so I left it out.
Golisopod
Its physical defense is already insane (base 140), so I gave it an Assault Vest to bump its special defense from 90 up to 135 (90 x 1.5). Now it's super bulky on both sides, serving as the team's primary tank. It has Drill Run to deal with Electric types, and I kept First Impression and Sucker Punch so it can still move first despite its low speed.
Scizor
This is your typical Swords Dance sweeper. The AI is set to use Swords Dance on the first turn. If you don't knock it out within two turns, it will probably wipe your entire team, making a Fire-type a must-have. I chose Bug Bite over X-Scissor because Technician makes it stronger (90 vs 80).
Armaldo
For the players, this guy's existence is just annoying. It's the lead, setting up Stealth Rock to pressure the Fire and Flying types that usually counter Bugs. The AI will actually switch Armaldo out for a better matchup after the rocks are up. If the player sets their own Stealth Rock, the AI will bring Armaldo back in to use Rapid Spin since hazards are lethal for this team. It also has Earthquake to cover its Rock and Steel weaknesses. Between Quick Claw and Stone Edge, it relies heavily on RNG—if the player has bad luck, it's going to be a miserable fight.
Volcarona
It's the special sweeper. Just like Scizor, if the player doesn't deal with it fast, it's game over. The AI will go for at least two Quiver Dances if its HP is not in the yellow zone, and maybe even a third if it has a chance. It carries Heavy-Duty Boots to ignore Stealth Rock damage, though I honestly have no idea how a moth is supposed to wear boots lol.
Vikavolt
I gave it a Calm nature and heavy investment in Def & Sp.D EVs. This should let it survive non-STAB super effective moves like Flamethrower. Since its special attack base stat is a massive 145, it deals insane damage if it survives the first hit. There are probably "better" Bug types I could have used, but a Champion team needs that "aura". Vikavolt has a great design, and that 145 Sp.Atk with a 500 BST just fits the vibe perfectly.
