The reason Mimikyu is in PoGo right now was because of the April Fools event. It's a Pokémon that pretends to be a Pikachu, so they thought it would be an easy joke to make.
"Come catch a Pikachu- oh wait, it's actually a Mimikyu in disguise! April Fools!"
Regular Pikachu were spawning during that event to make the joke more obvious. Mimikyu could've debuted in a Halloween event, but they went with April Fools instead.

A lot of those pokemon designs are pretty weird or just low effort. With excadrill my buddy mentioned it to me and I got super hyped because obviously excadrill is fucking sick, but had the same reaction to the design. Could have added cool glowing or colored stripey things going around him or an aura or something like other cool megas and not just turning him into a giant drill bit. Mega starmie I get, it's a starfish that doesn't even have a face or anything, and chandelure was doomed because it lacks really anything besides being a chandelier but mega feraligator is disappointing. It deserves more than that.
I don't mind it being a little slow but months of being boring with this kinda content is something else. All for the whales and pokecrack addicts to get desperate for some dopamine and go buy the new game in downtime from chasing shundos.
