Protect is the most basic move in the game, and it doesn't interact with it like the other moves. It is classified as a status move, however, it doesn't offer anything special, mainly when compared with other variations of protection (baneful bunker, spiky shield, king's shield, even wide guard).
As a moderate competitive player, I keep thinking about what the developers could do with it, and I came up with a few ideas, whose bases I think many people might have also thought of:
1) Protect could be a separated action, that wouldn't take a slot in your move.
2) It would still have a limited usage, which would be the same as its current play points.
4) Pokémon with access to variations would have the option to use it, and it would show on the screen (you couldn't use both, though). The Pokémon with access to wide guard would also have that option, alongside with protect. Detect could be a cosmetic option for protect to the Pokémon that has access to it.
5) The move would still work the same, including its interaction with items (choice items, assault vest). And the chances of failing if used in succession.
I think this would improve the competitive scene, as that fourth slot is a valuable resource, that could be used to strengthen the team strategy with a myriad of moves. What are your thoughts?
edit: only one person barely scratched on understanding my point. I feel discouraged to post anything here, the toxicity makes me want to quit and never come back.
