What is it getting away with?
Dessidian
I know I’m in the minority here, but jp texture feels way too busy and oversaturated to me. A lot of times I think the Pokemon in the card stands out better without as much texture.
Doozy_Jr
Wow the background is so much nicer on Japanese
sugabonesurmom
I like the English card better, too much texture on certain cards makes it look blurry or too much going on.
Certain cards are better, some are worse. Also might look different in hand vs photos. Idk too much UV texture looks weird, I still want it to look like a trading card not a 3d print.
Little bit of texture makes things pop, too much makes it look a bit too tacky. I like vintage cards so maybe I’m biased.
fieryred123
Is it as good as JP singles? No.
Is it at least still a very nice, beautiful card? Yeah, card looks amazing & I still prefer english for my personal collection.
Big_Diet7439
After opening Gundam, I realized Pokemon texture is whack. One piece has great texture as well. Bandai does it right.
BuyMeaSalad
I swear I can’t even see texture on like 99% of English SIRs
PlaymakerFan
Japanese texturing is for sure superior, but the cards are so thin, which I personally think makes them feel less lux
Sumiba
The English price right now is insane, I was thinking of buying it and the price basically doubled. This hobby is just crazy right now, I just like this artist.
MrWildspeaker
I collect almost exclusively Japanese! Better print quality and cheaper at the same time.
GalarianGengar
It’s because we can read the card.
LegoRedBrick
Not everyone likes the heavy saturated glossy look of Japanese texture. I think that part gets left out of this debate. The English cards muted texture looks better to some people. I think they could do a better job with centering on English cards but I don’t mind the different texture.
Stegosword
I can appreciate that Japanese cards look better, but my entire collection is in English and my brain will not let me have just a few Japanese cards. Plus I play the game and even though the majority of the pretty cards suck in game, I like to read the moves anyway
awesomesauceds
Getting away with what? The different quality? You literally have a choice to choose between two of them. You’re not locked down into only buying the US
skronk61
Collectors:
“Even knowing the clear difference in overall quality I would like to pay double for your English copy…”
“No I don’t know what the attacks mean because I wouldn’t be caught dead playing the card game, why?”
smd9788
The worse part for me is how obstructive the English text is. 25% of the card is obstructed
Ok-Yard-5025
On that night. Little Wooper stopped playing video games and became a man :p
I have been collecting only japanese but on SAR textures are to distracting from the artwork which is basically the reason why im collecting
Ven0m889
What gets me the most is the text, the english printing will consistently use multiple more lines of text than the japanese version. Same thing with the new mega gengar SIR, the japanese version looks so much better because it has less text lines. Very big problem with the gardevoir here too. I still am leaning toward only collecting english though because of the significant rarity difference with these cards in japanese being so much easier to pull.
9999eachhit
Dude theyre not even the same card 😂 I have a bunch of SIR/SAR pairs just because they are completely different experiences despite being the same artwork
One of my faves for Japanese modern. Pulled two from the same box and both graded 10s. Love seeing them slowly appreciate as well. Long holds for me!
TheRealNikoBravo
My Japanese Umbreon ex SAR is far superior to the English counterpart.
Zealousideal-Yak-824
Hey what’s the background on this card? Best one I’ve seen in a long time.
TTVx_Tweezy
Holy shit does Japanese actually look that much better? I haven’t been able to find any Japanese packs locally but these make me want to find some😂
Lost-Zone6369
One of my favorites is the 151 Blastoise SIR/SAR. The SIR is so plain but the blue and holo rings on the SAR are so much more vibrant and eye catching.
General_Past2168
Looks like the English card is slightly tilted and the glare of the foil is overshadowing and hiding the background. I see plenty of texture. Real issue is how you took the picture
ThunderPantsGo
I have the Japanese version and it’s such a beautiful card with all that texture.
DebaucheryKing62693
With…. What?
Rpres70324
I’m honestly contemplating just moving away from English. I honestly just prefer the art and my job has taken away my ability to play in local tournaments due to time constraints.
RepulsiveUse3372
thats why i like Japanese cards, they just look better
Perfect-Shoe-2899
Try to compare Crown Zenith VStar Arceus (EN) with the JP one. JP looks too detailed
Parking_Analysis9339
Unpopular opinion but I actually prefer the texture on the English cards.
Don’t get me wrong, I collect Japanese and Chinese as well – it’s a great way to get awesome cards for an affordable price. It’s just the SARs look like they’ve been dipped in glitter or something, they’re too sparkly lol.
When I saw them next to each other I couldn’t believe the difference.
BigOleDawng
Exactly why I prefer japanese for higher end, lower price for modern doesn’t hurt either.
GreatRecipeCollctr29
That’s why on the SiRs I like Japanese versions only.
xytlar
Japanese cards across the board look and feel so much better. It’s kind of crazy … how they’re cheaper and less in demand.
MorningLineDirt
Why people are so hyped on only english is beyond me
Milestailsprowe
Japanese SIRs and English everything else has been my move mostly
Ausavan
Always get Japanese if your goal is collect art instead of hold value. I bought a box of Japanese Paldean fates and pulled the shiny Charizard SAR. It was all I wanted and I am so fucking grateful to have pulled it.
I don’t have a real stance on ENG vs. JPN cards. I just wish they would make them all identical. Because sometimes you want to create a binder page and there’s that unaffordable English card the pumpers got a hold of and adding one Japan card to the page would look weird.

The Japanese one has depth, it’s beautiful.

Wasn’t expecting this post to get so much traction, it was fun talking about this on my lunch break. Here’s a couple more angles I took last night
Just got a jp bubble mew to go with my English one and im excited to see the difference in person
Such a pretty card

I have never seen this more prominent than on the [Gold Arceus VStar from Crown Zenith](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2F66qpc0ct0c2b1.jpg).
When I saw them next to each other I couldn’t believe the difference.

For the noob, what am I looking at here?
