It’s a cool connection, but Iris is definitely named after the flower, and I’m not sure the other meanings of the word ever entered the devs’ brains. Unlike the english which prefers elemental puns, JP Pokemon names nearly all of its major human characters after flowers or plants. Iris was one of only a few pre-modern era characters who were lucky enough to keep their names in translation. Drayden, her version counterpart in BW, was named after an alternative word for irises in the JP.

Iris is named after the Fringed Iris. I’m assuming you’re referring to the Spanish word for rainbow, Arcoiris. But that comes from Arco (bow) and Iris (the Greek goddess of rainbows). While there are some characters named after Mythologies, most characters have a Flower/Plant name origin. Especially in Japanese where some characters share names because they ran out of flower names.
