Dynamax combee seems to be another filler new dynamax to some people, but is it really the case or do they overlook how good it actually is? (Spoiler: it is a top tank for ground moves, you will want one as your zamazenta's partner)
Lets take a look into its female evolve form Vespiquen's stats:
Typing: Bug/Flying
Attack: 147
Defense: 190
HP: 172
Fast Moves: Fury Cutter (Bug 0.5s), Bug Bite (Bug 0.5s) Air Slash (Flying 1.0s), Poison Sting (Poison 0.5s).
Resistance: triple ground (0.244x), double grass, double fighting (0.391x), 1x bug (0.625x)
Vespiquen as a max attacker:
Vespiquen is the second Bug/Flying type dynamax we get after butterfree (167/137/155).
Vespiquen is a worse bug attacker than even dynamax butterfree, which is much easier to candy farm. But Vespiquen has an advantage over butterfree having a 0.5s bug fast move without the need of elite fast TM.
It has the options of stab bug and flying max move and also non-stab poison max move.
However, Vespiquen's weak 147 attack stats makes it a very weak max attacker, a level 3 bug max attack vespiquen does only ~3 more damage than level 1 bug max attack metagross.
You are not going to use it as a max attacker, its attack stat is just bad.
Vespiquen as a tank:
Vespiquen truly shines as a tank for max battle due to its triple ground resistance with a decent defense stats of 190, it even gets bug/poison 0.5s fast move to generate energy effectively.
A pokemon we can compare it to is Lugia (193/310/235), yes the legendary Lugia, as it shares similar resistance and lugia currently being the #1 ground face tank.
Looking at their typing, Vespiquen has extra 1x resistance against ground and grass move compared to Lugia, does it make it better in tanking those type?
We will be also analyzing fighting type moves since both double resist it and work as a control, with that lets take a look at their performance against these 3 types based on previous boss data (Regirock for ground and fighting, Ho-Oh for grass) using pokechespin ( https://pokechespin.net/dynamax )
We can see when tanking Ground and Grass move, Vespiquen actually takes less damage than Lugia sometimes. Meaning using max guard on Vespiquen is as valuable as using it on Lugia when facing Ground and Grass move due to Vespiquen having extra 1x resistance to those types.
And when tanking fighting type moves, Lugia's max guard performs 54-59% better, making it not the ideal choice at tanking fighting type damage.
Vespiquen currently has the best max guard against Ground type moves and it is also good for grass moves (venusaur/corviknight are better budget options for grass type).
However Vespiquen's mediocre HP stats makes Lugia still a better choice in scenarios where you need to maximize damage output or you won't be using max guard. In fact a level 50 vespiquen has the same tankiness of a level 30 Lugia facing ground/grass move.
Here is a table to summarize the difference between Vespiquen and Lugia as a tank:
| Comparson\Pokemon | Vespiquen | Lugia |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Quite cheap, it is a nesting species you can hunt for candies and only has a 3km buddy distance. | Expensive, it is a legendary pokemon. |
| Max Guard Efficiency | Sightly better against ground/grass moves (takes 1 less damage than Lugia sometimes) | Much better otherwise. |
| 0.5s Fast Move? | Yes (Bug/Poison) | No |
| Tankiness without Max Guard | Worse (even for ground/grass moves, a level 50 Vespiquen only performs the same as a level 30 Lugia) | Better |
Is Vespiquen futureproof?
Surprisingly the answer is Yes.
Vespiquen is the highest defense out of all pokemon with triple ground resistance (except for mega pinsir) currently.
And Lugia has the highest defense out of all pokemon with double ground resistance currently.
Vespiquen will be a top ground type tank for a long time.
Should you train one?
Yes, I recommend getting a level 30+ Vespiquen with max guard level 3 as your tank for ground move coverage while being decent at grass/fighting moves.
For the future it will be one of the top tanks for gigantamax sandaconda (3/4 charge moves are ground type). And in general it is a great choice to cover ground attacks from bosses while being decent at grass and fighting attacks
Ground is also one of zamazenta's weaknesses that needs to be covered, vespiquen can take that role perfectly.
Summary
Vespiquen is an excellent tank for ground moves that wont be outclassed anytime soon while being quite cheap to train. It is definitely worth it to get one yourself and you might want to grind a few female ones during this week.
