Nintendo

Nintendo is making the right decisions – Because it’s not about you

First, let me clarify that I’m writing this from a bit of a “devil’s advocate” kind of view. I just want to start a discussion about this.

I’ve seen a ton of posts and discussions both here and all over the internet about how “Nintendo hates money”, “Nintendo is being anti-consumer”, “Nintendo is charging too much for this”, etc. Basically, it can be summed up as “I think Nintendo is stupid because they are not doing what I want them to do.”

Well, guess what: It’s not about you. Nintendo is a business and you can type away angrily at the newest announcements all you want, but business is good. We may be big Nintendo fans that want the best from the company, and we are most likely the most vocal, but out of the 86 million people that have bought a Switch, we are the minority.

* Stocks are at a level they haven’t been since the Wii days.

* The Switch is selling incredibly well. It will soon overtake the PS3 in lifetime sales and will likely outsell the Wii, Nintendo’s best-selling console ever, by the end of the year.

* Switch games are constantly on the weekly top sellers, even games that are several years old

With all of that in mind, let me answer some questions:

* Why do first-party Switch games never go on sale? – Because they don’t have to.
* Why does Nintendo not make Mario Kart 9? – Because 8 is still selling incredibly well, 7 years after release.
* Why does Nintendo charge 60$ for a 10-year-old game with almost no improvements? – Because it will still sell, no matter how much the “hardcore” fans complain.
* Why does Nintendo not fix the Joy-Con? – Because it’s not an issue for the majority of users
* Why does Nintendo not make a more powerful Switch “Pro”? – Because it would be expensive to make for little incremental sales.

I am a huge Nintendo fan myself and of course, I am often disappointed in some decisions and would wish for more, like most of you. But from Nintendo’s perspective, purely business, they’re doing more than enough right.
