Steamworld Heist – Best Game I’ve Played All Year

I just finished Steamworld Heist. It was a wonderful experience.
I’ve heard about these games for a long time, on this subreddit and from friend recommendations. Honestly, the art style was kind of a turn off, but once i got into the actual gameplay–it is amazing.

Gameplay — I am very impressed. It’s a game that does a small amount really well. Thankfully there is no base management, and even on casual I was rolling currency and epic loot.

Each stage is a ship you board and have to complete various objective. Sometimes you collect loot, other times you need to kill everything, and then evacuate. Combat is simple, you have a small team, 1-4 characters, and they have different classes and skills. Use those skills to eliminate enemies. Rinse and repeat.

Very simple RPG mechanics of leveling and unlocking new skills. You equip your characters with new weapons and armor or gear that increases movement, damage, or health packs, etc.

Art — Take it or leave it. It did grow on me a bit. Thankfully the characters have so much personality in their design and even movement. The guns are fun, very XCOM, and the Star Wars / Western / Apocalyptic aesthetic in the ships and locations is enjoyable. Each sector brings new pieces of cover and design in the ships so you aren’t playing in the same arenas the entire game.

Ease of Access — The game is really simple to pick up. Skills and turns are explained really well. Team management is really simple. And, best of all, there is a level dedicated to grinding before the first really hard boss.

Music & Sound — I honestly don’t listen to game sounds when I play games, weird, I know, so I can’t comment.

So, if you have a few extra bucks kicking around and want a really enjoyable experience, wait for it to come on sale and dive in!
