  2. Wise-Phrase-5755

My uncle works at Nintendo and he confirmed this is the Switch Pro.

  3. QuarterRican04

Completely expected if true. We are 5.5 years into switch, and a new 3 year dev cycle about to start for gen 10 of pokemon

  4. Half will say it’s absurd and the switch is selling really well and a new hardware is useless

The other half will say it’s really time and they are tired of sub 30 fps and their xenoblade downgrading near 500p.

You know what ? Both are right…Nintendo can afford to delay the switch 2/pro but then again they can try and attract a new audience with a more powerful switch and when first and third parties have to spend too much money optimising, it may be time

  5. LordMudkip

    It’s pokemon.

“Next generation” is like maybe Wii equivalent for them.

  6. Wait you mean nintendo is working on next generation hardware 6 years into its current hardware life. I’m shocked that a company makes smart business decision.

  7. thrawn-did-no-wrong

They should probably hire some more people for R&D for this generation too

  8. MemphisKansasBreeze

I’d say this is almost a lock. It would be insane if they didn’t reveal the next gen Nintendo console before the end of 2023 based on how aged the console is

  9. StoryAndAHalf

Back when magazines were all the rage, there would be an interview with a head honcho of one of the console makers, and each time the question of “when did the development of the next console start?” And the answer always was “About the time we shipped (last gen).” I don’t know why people expect them to sit back and do nothing for 4+ years.

  10. j0llypenguins

what does r&d mean please I need to know

  11. Yerm_Terragon

Seems only natural. Regardless of however far out the next generation may be, they need to plan for next gen hardware. Especially with Nintendo holding a large stake in the franchise and the complaints people had about the quality of the Gen 8 games, I would not be surprised if they were taking a proactive approach to make sure that does not happen again.

  12. Super_Bright

Yeah sounds about right. From what we know scarlet and violet went into production when sword and shield shipped meaning they’re probably about to start or have already started Gen 10 development right now.

  13. kirbyfox312

I mean, this seemed inevitable for them to launch with Let’s Go: Pichu and Let’s Go: Togepi titles.

  14. Digital_Individual

Nintendo has the video game industry right where they want them. It’s time. Unleash the GameCube 2.0

  15. If Nintendo was smart they would make a super switch that plays all switch game and also has exclusive super switch games tailored for the upgraded hardware and console generation. I mean you can buy a 128 GB micro SD card for next to nothing, clearly the chip based carts are the way to go for physical games…

  16. MirukuChu

Personally, I kinda just want a “switch 2”, whatever that might be called, but I’m a bit worried that might confuse consumers like the wii u did. Either way, I love the switch library, but I’m pretty tired of how it performs.

  17. TheNPC33

Plot twist, it’s actually to make Tembo the Badass Elephant 2 for Xbox Series X /s

  18. I just hope they give the Switch successor the treatment the GameCube got with the Wii.

    Backwards Compatibility.

  19. Heavenly_Nova1

I’m pretty sure most people aren’t shocked to hear that Nintendo is developing a new console at this point but I don’t think it’s going be revealed anytime soon.

  20. kukumarten03

Pokemon will still looks garbage anyway with that new console

  21. peeweeharmani

I think this headline would be more surprising if it didn’t suggest the next Pokémon was being developed for next gen hardware. By the time this comes out the switch will be 7 or 8 years old.

  22. CMDR_omnicognate

Well yeah, I suspect they’re always hiring for R&D for the next gen hardware. It’s not like they finish a games console and then everyone goes on holiday for 5 years

  23. ParagonEsquire

This is unsurprising but it’s still kinda neat to see it in print.

I was very bullish on get a next Gen Switch at the end of 2023 until I got my steam deck, now I think we’re a little further out, just based on what valve was able to do at the $400 price point and knowing Nintendo wants to come in way under that. I would still expect 2024 though.

  24. MarvelManiac45213

I’m really hoping the Switch successer launches in holiday 2024. I know Nintendo said 10 year life cycle but the hardware feels beyond outdated at this point. I think 7 years of Switch is a nice sweet point. Back in 2017 the Switch did feel revolutionary but in 2022 it feels outdated with both the Steam Deck dropping and the PS5/Xbox Series X released. It was cool seeing games like Doom, Skyrim, Wolfenstein 2, etc. running on the Switch back then but now it just feels embarrassing getting 3rd party games on Switch that struggle to reach 30 fps and 720p at full price in 2022 or having to use “cloud versions” to work around the outdated tech which totally goes against the whole idea of the Switch in the first place..

Also not even just 3rd party games but even a lot of Nintendos first party games are being held back by the Switch’s hardware. Bayonetta 3, Bowsers Fury, Forgotten Land, Xenoblade 2, BOTW, all have technical issues or framerate issues. Granted nothing MAJOR that takes away from the games quality but man it would be great to have these running on more powerful hardware to just fine tune the kinks.

  25. mattyplant

Switch successor for Zelda, just like the Wii U.

Switch game sales, new console sales…..

  26. Future_Zer0

I just hope the new console has the ability to up the resolution of older games. I cannot play the xenoblade games despite desperately wanting to due to how bad and blurry the graphics are on my 77” OLED TV. Even if I try to play them handheld, they look horrendous. If the new consoles don’t have that ability, looks like I’m going to be forced to emulate in order for those games to be playable.

  27. Framed-Photo

With how successful the switch has been, we all know Nintendo is going to be making a direct sequel, like the gameboy to gameboy advanced.

I would expect full backwards compatibility with the switch (except perhaps things like labo, if they redesign the joycons like they should), probably using the same cart slot, etc.

My hopes for something like that would be to redo the joycons pretty much entirely, make them higher quality and put real analog sticks in em, smaller bezels/higher quality screen (90hz is a pipe dream but it’s what I would want), and of course a much more modern SOC. A new model of switch could see GIGANTIC performance gains while keeping pretty much the same footprint, and having possibly better battery life.

  28. It’s hard to believe but it makes sense.

The Switch has been around since 2017. It’s time for the SWATCH

  29. duckdotexe

The most surprising part of this to me is that any of Pokemon’s budget goes to R&D given how shit the games are now.

  30. InitialDriftZ33

Introducing the Nintendo Switch OLED 5g edition, now with less power!
