  1. We’ve had absolute radio silence on this game for years now, but I’m still confident that it’ll come out (maybe it’ll be on the console after the Switch) and it’ll be amazing. They’re not rushing something out the door, they’ve got all the people they need and they won’t say anything publicly until it’s ready to impress everybody.

Just for context, none of these people seem to have still been at Retro during Prime 4 development (or in the Switch era at all). One left after Prime 3, two left around 2011-2012, and one seems to have left sometime after Prime 2.

It’s definitely still interesting to hear their perspective on what direction Retro might take with Prime 4, but just wanted to note that it’s still fairly speculative and not, like, “I was at Retro while they were working on Prime 4 and here’s what their plan for the game is” or anything like that.

My pre-order is still active and has been rotting for 5 years.

Looking forward to Prime 4, but I have to make a Metroid PSA:

Returnal is more than everything I could want from a next gen Metroid. If you’re hungry for Metroid, Returnal will make you very very happy. It’s the best PS5 game and strong contender for GotG. For Metroid all I hope is that its good, but wouldn’t expect it to touch Returnal (only the original Prime is in the same league IMO, nothing since has been as fresh)

Here is why it’s such a strong match to Metroid:

    1. Sci fi female suited protagonist, single person ship
    2. Dark atmosphere mostly
    3. isolationist
    4. gear based progression with permanent unlocks
    5. cramped rooms, not open
    6. they’re both shooter/platformers
    7. epic bosses
    8. gameplay first but narrative woven in
    9. environment based story through scanning and reading logs
    10. Secrets, secret rooms

Here is where Returnal twists the formula to make something much more special:

    1. Shooter gameplay is so much more intense and satisfying. Returnal is just tighter, with way more bullets to dodge, a better melee option, best dash in gaming, great weapon reloads, and more. Returnals action ruins other games. It’s a thing.
    2. Roguelike elements keep the game interesting far longer as you face different map layouts, find many varieties of loot, and make lots of buff/debuff decisions. It also self corrects the difficulty as eventually you get a strong combo of drops and you melt all the bosses/enemies. People are getting 50-70 hour play times before seeing final credits, unlike a Metroid which is usually 1/3 that for first run.
    3. Coop!
    4. Story woven in better in Returnal IMO

Returnal is also on modern hardware and just looks amazing and runs very smooth.

I would be thrilled to see Retro borrow some ideas from Returnal, especially the rogue inspired loot and intense action. I agree open world doesn’t seem like a good match to Metroid.

We’ll get it at some point. I’ll probably be survived by my great grandchildren by then, but we’ll get it…

Would be awesome to see Mick
Gordon get attached to the soundtrack. It would be a large departure from DOOM – it would have to be – but he is precisely the kind of mad music scientist who could breathe new life into the sound design and score while staying true to the roots.

  7. PowerForward

Well I definitely gotta check out the Chernobyl soundtrack now. Thanks for posting this, this is great stuff!

I wonder if they’re even going to follow through with the Sylux stuff or just decide to do their own thing entirely… wouldn’t blame em it’s not like there’s a lot to work with right now.

Prime 4 is about to release shortly after Half Life 3 and Warcraft 4

  9. LongSeshGaming

I don’t see Nintendo as the poster for quality anymore. Most of their games are unfinished and need Dlc after releasing now, pokemon is excused as not their responsibility but it is, Zelda links awakening’s frame drops on a game that old is pretty annoying. And these declines from what Nintendo used to deliver, exist with many of their games being wii u ports, so less work already. They still have good games and I hope metroid is one of them
