I respect being a proponent of diversity, but complaining in this case sounds like a reach to me. Probably just a (bad) hot take by him, which isn’t worthy of being published or talked about.
Toad was played by a white actor in the 1993 movie, but is a black actor now, for example. It just doesn’t really matter that much, I feel.

I really like John. He was in a lot of movies I loved as a kid but I really don’t understand why now you have to be the same background as an animated character. Mario and Luigi aren’t really the archetype of people of color so he’s basically saying anyone would be better than these two white guys to play characters that are basically white. They have Italian accents but it’s not like they were created by Italian people. They’re just characters.

Except you have a cast featuring Keegan-Michelle Key, Khary Payton, and Kevin Micheal Richardson who are all of African American descent along with Fred Armisen who is of Korean, German, Japanese, and Venezuelan descent. People need to stop bitching about the casting and just enjoy the fact that they have a Mario movie that’s faithful to the damn games it’s based on. Jesus Christ, there’s no pleasing people nowadays.
