This magikarp just randomly appeared near me. I was nowhere close to water & was slightly confused as I caught it but after appraising it, I’m even more confused. What’s going on?
I do have a magikarp buddy if that helps explain things

Nothing? Magikarp can spawn anywhere. Even back in the day when magikarp water biomes were a thing you could still find them in other places. Congrats on the hundo tho, it’ll make a good mega gyarados.

Nothing is going on. You just got lucky. Magikarp is one of the season 9 spawns. So thourgh all the season you may find them more often, like all the other pokemon on the season of wishes list. You may also find their evolution lines in the wild.
If you didn’t powered it up, it should be level 26. Therefore the trick you did, if you would like to call it that way, is that you caught a weatherboosted pokemon. It raises their IV floor by +4. So if you would have caught it not in rainy weather it might only been a 11/13/11 or something.
