Just look up pictures for “knight fighting slug medieval” and you might understand people depicted knights fighting these beasts in the same way you’ve seen knights slay dragons!
Bulbapedia also mentions Goomy may be based on the ‘Glaucus atlanticus’, also known as the ‘blue sea dragon’, so I guess that is where the dragon typing may also come from.

Goomy and its evolutions are based on the [Lou Carcolh](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Carcolh), a mythical mollusk/serpent creature from French folklore.
