Civilization 6 is one of the BEST deals & Some Thoughts

I know the sale has been going on for a while but I only decided to get it yesterday. It’s mainly because of it being ridiculously cheap for the value it offers and I’ve been wanting to play this famous strategy game for some time.

If you were like me, who have not played a Civ game before, here are some answers, thoughts and experience that I’ve had as a complete newbie. After all, this is a pretty hefty game to bite into even at deciding what to buy.

1. The base game is only $6. Are the DLCs worth it? Which version to buy?

Some are. If you really want to make every cent count, get the **Platinum Edition** at $15. It contains the most important and significant expansions. Some consider the base game slightly bare-bone though This may be a little bit of loss aversion at play. Civ 6 is a standalone and finished game. If you don’t like to miss anything out, the full Anthology Edition at $25.

2. Is the game cross-platform?

[Yes](https://twitter.com/CivGame/status/1113187346843787264?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1113187346843787264%7Ctwgr%5E9afea54470e28dc1925c941584b4eca48b525727%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eurogamer.net%2Fcivilization-6-gets-cross-platform-cloud-saves-for-pc-and-switch). The Switch version didn’t support it before 2019 though. Just link your Switch account with the publisher’s account. Also, this is how to get cloud-saving since it’s not compatible with Nintendo’s cloud save.

The game also supports local co-op.

3. Why this graphically-inferior version?

The portability and… free from the curse of unlocking achievements. While I was looking around for answers to my own questions, I’m surprised by the number of people who mentioned that they ended up hunting for achievements instead of letting the game unfold. While there’s no wrong way to play a game, it is not very fun based on my personal experience.

I’m not going to go into details on its performance. There are plenty of analysis and reviews online. All I wanted to say is… *It’s good enough.*

That really is quite cheap. I bought it for $8 a while back and felt it was a bargain even then. I’d never played a Civ game before either.

That said, my gaming time is limited (working adult, bla bla) and I felt like the slow strategy gameplay wasn’t what I was looking for most nights. It’s ended up languishing in my ~~backlog~~ unplayed library. Maybe someday I’ll be willing to spend more time building empires.

  2. Honestly I wouldnt recommend that much. The games lags and stutters A LOT by the end game.

If you have the option to play on PC, go for it without a doubt. Seriously. Its way better in there for many reasons. If you dont have the option, then sure… go with the Switch version.

i would only recommend playing the base game, on small/standard maps. and maybe rise and fall.

gathering storm, larger maps, and any game modes really push the switch and make the load times a thoroughly unenjoyable experience.

I have it on PC, Xbox, and Switch.

I never play it on the Switch (under 2 hours logged)

    The load times are insane.

I love the game. It’s my most played game on Switch by several hundred hours.

It just sucks that the devs left consoles out of the last leader pass.

I got stuck in the tutorial LOL

I dont know why I cant finish my turn (when you are going to build the second city I think)

I bought it when it first came out. I still need to purchase the upgrade for it

For me personally I played the game with no dlc for a while because I was cheap. I eventually got the dlc and it makes the game way better. If you are gonna buy the game get rise and fall and gathering storm for sure. I have it on switch and xbox series x and the series x is better for load times. If you’re playing on switch don’t play with more than 6 people in a game because the ai turns will take forever by the end. You can mitigate it somewhat by turning off animations in the settings. The better machine will perform better so get it on the best device you can but the switch version is fine, i played it for hundreds of hours. It doesn’t have cross buy I just paid for the game and the dlc twice lol.

thats a really great deal, but personally i cant stand the slow loading times and movement on the switch.

I agree that it is great to have on the go, the only downside is that the switch version isn’t up to date with content though as only IOS and PC/Mac got the leader pass.

Absolutely phenomenal game, tho late game can reallllly lag. I’d keep it to small maps.

That said, the console controls are surprisingly good. Works really well. And it’s so fun to see the game nice and big on the TV. I haven’t played it on Switch since I got my new laptop, but it’s great.

Only problem right now is leader pass DLC released late last year has no plans for consoles, Android versions. Let Firaxis and 2K know you want it.

And yes Switch Civ6 is awesome

    > The portability and… free from the curse of unlocking achievements.

    And how.

I’ve been a Civ player on PC since Civ 2, and this curse is real.
