It made a good amount of money, especially for a video game film. It definitely wasn’t a commercial failure.

  2. Intelligent_Local_38

No, it was fine. Wasn’t a smashing success, wasn’t a failure either. Mixed reviews don’t mean something is a failure.

  3. i really enjoyed this movie. it was visually appealing and a lot of fun

  4. OriginalBiga

It was fine. Not enough Pokemon. It really showed its budget in the crowd scenes where you saw the same few mons repeated dozens of times. I thought it fell apart narratively with the Mewtwo plot.

It was great to see people just chilling with Pokemon and leading mundane lives though. And it was better acted than expected.

I’ve never heard of it called a failure outright, but I also wasn’t looking at critical reviews.

I am late 30s and took my daughter to see it when she was around 10. She liked it because she recognized a lot of the Pokemon she had seen from the cartoon, and I enjoyed it. As s a person who only played red and blue when they first came out, I recognized Pokémon from my childhood.

I didn’t feel like it was trying to be critically acclaimed. Reminds me of how the Sonic movies were handled. Watch and enjoy.

I thought it was fantastic, actually. I’m curious to play the game but $40 seems a bit steep for it. Was surprisingly entertained by the demo and liked the format, though.

No it was successful both financially and got decent reception.

  8. Adamaneve

I don’t think it was a failure per se, but I also don’t think it was quite the success they hoped for considering they apparently scrapped a sequel.

  9. I’d call it a mild success financially and critically, but I fucking love it. It gave me most things I would want from a live action pokemon adaptation

really disliked how ryan reynolds was the voice of pikachu, and could not enjoy the movie with a fully communicating in english pokemon. i usually like him alot but this is just a wrong role

I remember loving this movie when it came out, hell I even bought and downloaded it on my phone, but I remember hearing that it wasn’t a good movie from most people and thinking that the common consensus was that it was a bad movie.

So, I think most people disliked Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Pikachu, or at least that’s what’s been said to me. The movie itself was good imo.

But he really isn’t. He is the voice of the kids (Tim?) father. He can hear his dad speaking to him, everyone else hears a Pikachu. They are separate entities sharing a body. This is established in the movie, but when I’ve asked people their thoughts, this never gets brought up.

I liked it but god does it annoy me how like every other piece of Pokemon media it just ignores the ethics of it all in the least creative way possible by just having battles be banned but instead we get to see a Machamp be a crossing hard and now I’m wondering how he’s paid cause that’s just a full time job…..I trailed off I just want blockbuster Pokemon media that goes as in on the world as the manga did…except with Mewtwo I still don’t care for how the manga handles him.

  14. First movie I took my daughter to where she was actually interested in so it was a success for me

I don’t think it was a *failure* but I also don’t think it met projected goals internally which is why the sequel movie and game have both been seemingly shelved. For the highest-grossing franchise in the world, TPCi likely wanted more than $400m for their first live-action movie. In comparison, the first Sonic movie pulled in $50m less but that could be see as a win over Detective Pikachu considering how much less valuable it is as a franchise in comparison. On top if that, the second movie would go on to not only make more money than the first but also outperform Detective Pikachu.

So yeah, I don’t see Detective Pikachu as a failure so much as a venture that didn’t gain enough traction to warrant more entries. We’ve probably seen the last of this spin-off series, but it certainly wasn’t a bad attempt at something new.

  16. It was fantastic, the acting was great and they did understand the Pokemon universe. It’s definitely one of the best game adaptation.

  17. TheMysticBard

In pretty sure it got pretty good reviews and did good its first weekend at the box office

  18. If there isn’t a sequel, it’s because the moviemakers themselves wrote the movie in a way that Detective Pikachu as a character can’t come back. Who thought that was a good idea? I was baffled at the finality of the ending even when I saw that in theaters.

  19. TyleNightwisp

It was okayish but Sonic 2 is really THE video game movie adaptation.

  20. It was good, and it was a mildly successful movie, but not enough to convince the producers to continue with a sequel, sadly.

  21. Greg13Nomad

Only if the box office receipts were less than the production budget.

  22. joey0live

Ryan Reynolds did so much marketing for this movie…I still laugh at his Twitter post of how he pirated this.

It was for me a 7.5/10

Not a blockbuster, but not a razzies either 😛

It was a simple fun family movie featuring Deadpool as Pikachu, and you really forget about the realistic effects on the Pokémon easily. Pikachu looks the part, just like the other creatures.

  24. It’s not a failure technically. But it COST a lot to make. For such a huge investment, I think the companies were all hoping for much more than what they got.

  25. Langis360

It was a good movie. Kinda sad we never got another.
